The 493rd began flying missions in early June, 1944 using B-24H aircraft. By early autumn, they transitioned on to B-17s for the duration of the war. "Little Warrior" was shot down on 29 Jun 44 on a mission to Quakenbruk. Flak tore in to their bomb bay rupturing the fuel transfer system and turned the aircraft into a blazing blow torch. The photo of "Little Warrior" in its death throes has often been published. I present it as a memorial to the many airmen of all sides who met with a sudden firey death.
