• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

LST-906 (Makeshift Aircraft Carrier)

LST-906 (Makeshift Aircraft Carrier) 2024-12-29

No permission to download
This rebuild of the stock CFS3 Landing Ship Tank (LST) to be LST-906. LST-906 was converted was into a makeshift aircraft carrier with a custom-built airstrip above deck. She was the base for six USAAF L-4B "Grasshoppers" flown as artillery spotters for the US 3rd Infantry Division during the invasion of southern France in September 1944.

From what I can tell LST-906 was a blue hull and gray upper paint. The makeshift flight deck looks to have been painted blue and LST-906 seems to have had pair of NL pontoons on each side as well. Of note is that it looks like LST-906 also may of had sister, LST-525 with the same makeshift flight deck and pontoons but LST-525 seems to be all gray paint as documented by the Piper Aviation Museum.
