This obsolete observation aircraft of the early 1930s was still in front line service with the Polish Air Force when the Germans invaded on Sept 1st 1939. Many were destroyed on the ground in early German air raids and others shot down by Polish ground fire (aircraft recognition not a strong point). Despite this their crews performed heroically in the short period of the campaign. Several escaped to Romania after the Soviet Union attacked Poland from the east (in line with the Nazi-Soviet Pact )
