• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

Cantina gone dry?

Hi all, has Canalenos Cantina lost its liqour licence? :icon29: :guinness:

Just wondering as there seems to be very few posts over there lately

Am I the only one that kind of think the Newshawks has lost a lot posters too? Seems like less and less folks are coming around... I know I still pop in, but am quite busy with other things and don't spend as much time as I used to...

There are definitely fewer people in the Cantina and Newshawks. I wonder if their are fewer people overall, if not they must all be in the FX forum.
Seems people started disappearing about the time C9G left.

People like to argue and discuss stuff.

It is very difficult to argue or even discuss a topic on line in either forum without the risk of:

a) your argument degrading into name calling

b) getting shut down by the admins

c) Unintentionally offending the easily offended who live to be offended

I do believe you have nailed it! So where did all these people go?

I drop by the Newshawks every now and then... just to read what's what. Sometimes folks will post a cool video link here and I enjoy watching those. Haven't been over to the Cantina in ages tho. Not sure where everyone has dissappeared off to. :pop4:

I don't know where I fit in TeeSea's list but I just got tired of some people and their attitude and left about 6 months ago. I only recently started to drop in and snoop. I see the same instigators are still here.
How are you doing Chris? I hope you had a a very Merry C and a Happy New Year.

Common problems among most boards, some more so than others.

Actually, I'm willing to bet more people are shifting over to social media and YouTube instead of using forums.
I know a few people who don't go to forums anymore because they would rather 'facebook' and tweet'.
They also have their favorite YouTube subscriptions they follow.

Forums require you to have to do 'work', having to search and seek for information. Read through threads.
They also tend to be moderated.
You have to sit at your computer and browse.
They are seen as old tech and old school by many these days.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc all offer more immediate and instant gratification of information for the masses.
They are mostly unmoderated, in my experience (try reading the comments with many YouTube videos without coming away in disgust).
The information is easier seen on tablets and smartphones as well.

Just my two cents.

Joe! I'm doing great! I was just thinking about you yesterday and wondering how you were doing. I think I'm overdue in coming to give you a ride some where's.

Yeah....I'd agree with the social media/Youtubie image. There's more socially interactive choice online these days. And perhaps desktop flightsims may not be generating the attraction they were a decade ago. ( Activety always gets slower around this time of year here, doesn't it....?) Perhaps some just come by for a quick sim scan, download....move on to....ummm...Twitter (et al).

Our social fabric is changing.

Fast.

You're expected to be wired up and online 24/7. If you have gas, it's noteworthy online...and peers will have comment and comparison. It unsettles me that phones are now internet.

I refuse to do Facebook, Twitter...anything else like it. My celphone is often turned off most of the day so that I can work undisturbed. People become intensely emotional that they can't have instant drive-through access to me.
Leave a message. I'll get back to you this evening. Let's meet in person, look at the plans, have a coffee....talk....humanely...personally....empathetically...take some timely...shake a real hand...

Remember phones before answering machines...?

Ring ring ring....no answer...? Oh...I'll call back later.

So simple.

That's my rant and I'm stickin' to it.

i dont know about the cantina..as i forget its even there until some one mentions it....dont know why..i have a feeling i would have enjoyed it in its heydays, but i keep trying to post stuff...sometimes i know i just post crap...like the gimme dat ding, song the otherday...i did that because i enjoy that song..and there had not been a new post in the newshawks all day ,and then no one commented on it...lol...guess im the only one who likes it....got a new song i like (video) but it has two problems....one its a political song bashing a past presidentual nominee ( its a parody and funny) and two..its sung by openly gay young men and i dont think youse guys would like it..its not dirty...just differant...lol..

but back to posting...ive been noticing for sometime now that on a whole..SOH hasnt been nearly as active nor as fun as it was..for a time there were so many arguments, fights, and missunderstandings,to me it just took the wind from the sails...but i come here several times a day anyway....i love this place and i feel guilty as hell that i cant contribute to the "bandwidth drive" this month,if its still up next month i will...but after bills this month..im at 7.79 in my account...just cant justify donating right now when i could use a handout myself...next month i need to pay a year old doctors bill as well...but if i have ten left over...even if i have to send ickie a check in the mail i will...

Yup, feel the same way.
It's a Cell Phone, not a Cell Texter.
Call me on it, I'm not going to sit and decode a message, and wait for a reply.
Just talk to me on the friggin' phone. It's quicker.

Facebook, I tried for a while, ultimately just shut it off. Most of the time it was TMI on folks posts.
Twitter. I really don't care what people ate for lunch, or when they went to the bathroom.

I am guilty of having Facebook, Twitter and a mobile phone. Facebook I look at after the email check while having a morning cuppa or two. Twitter I rarely use and my mobile phone is always on because of my involvement with the Rural Fire Service and other organisations where I need to leave a phone number as I don't like my home phone being made public.

One of my main uses for using FB is to keep in contact with some distant friends and also my kids. Like I said I check it over the morning cuppa and again at night.

I belong to several forums but SOH is the one I check in with the most.

Oh yes I am a happily retired gentleman with lots of time on my hands but I like to spend some time outdoors. That is when the arthritis pain allows me to do so. When I can do this it is usually time to grab the camera and take a drive somewheere and see what is available to photograph. I also like to wet the line occasionally but rarely catch anything. Just an excuse for a day out with my oldest grandson.

The Quarter Moon Saloon is very lightly moderated and although some there have "conflicts", there's lots of interesting back-and-forth available. It's what used to be known as 'Oso's Outhouse".

:running:

I left Flightsim.com a few months ago due to the lack of interest by most of the members there, not to mention that the site is stagnant, you can check in on a monday morning and it will still have the exact same posts on friday so I started lurking about here.I find that at least here people can still hold a civil conversation without "slamming" each other for one thing or another......and I won't mention that some of the mods there are a little "hostile" at times!:kilroy:

Well there's some interesting comments in this thread.
We are a global site and thus we moderate against the sort of parochial unpleasantness that sometimes festers up from God knows where. The best place for controversy is Oso's...off our site and into the cauldron.
Personally I would prefer not to have an off-topic forum, as what bonds us here is a love (or addiction to) flightsim. Here there are only observations on existing product, or comments on new product and as long as we are civil in our discourse then all will be well.
If you're looking for a food fight then this is not the place to do it as we do not allow that. We are a mature site and do not appreciate unnecessary descents into off-topic controversy.

My attitude towards SOH is the same as my attitude towards my neighborhood bar. It's worth putting up with the occasional bonehead just for the company of the good folks. :mixedsmi:
