Good morning,

Yesterday, I approved a new scenery package by Jean Bomber and UncleTgt that completely redoes the Caroline Islands, allowing you to use Rhumbaflappy's new watermasks, and have corrected shoreline locations, with coastlines!

According to the readme, several stock airbases have been relocated and updated with gavinc's models, and some of MaskRider's non-GSL scenery for the Carolines have been updated, and turned into GSL bases, with his permission.

Here's the full skinny: Caroline Islands by Jean Bomber & UncleTgt

This project started life as a way to use Jean Bomber’s excellent Truk Lagoon scenery in a CFS2 install that used Rhumba's more accurate new world mesh. It quickly grew into a much larger project to redraw all of the Caroline Islands & Atolls so they were depicted better within CFS2.

It comprises: New LWM polys to match Rhumbas more accurate world mesh. New coastlines(with & without sandy beaches), & a complete set of water textures. New land & water class to give a better impression of the coral atolls.

Several stock airbases were relocated & redrawn.

Some of MaskRiders airbases are affected, these were relocated to match the new mesh & converted to gsl with destroyable objects at the same time.

I also added a couple of new fields – a seaplane base on Dublon, a seaplane base on Ponape, & a new short strip on Puluwat. New gsl work to give detail to the harbour areas as well as the airbases environs. The textures were designed to display best using Dvslat’s FSX style dark jungle textures, & pacific blue water. This scenery is designed to work on a stock install that has Rhumbas new world mesh added.

requesting assistance!

I have only problems with Maskrider Micronesia scenery only , the rest airbases in this addon works fantastic. May i delete wrong scenerys files or bitmaps as tutorial say i must to do!. i apreciate ideas what can i made wrong .

It looks like you don't have matching textures in your CFS2/ TEXTURE & CFS2/sSCENEDB/ WORLD/TEXTURE folders.

The water/reef appearance is a combination of textures & scenery layers, reading then in a specific order. If the game looks for a particular bitmap name, & gets conflicting bitmap appearances to display, or can't find the bitmap that the scenery bgl calls for, it will display as a block of green or blue or tan brown.

My guess from looking at your screenshot is you have by "Pacific Blues revised" sea textures. The textures with this scenery will replace these. There are also some custom textures that need to be added, most obviously lagon1.bmp & lagon2, as the fringing reef is not displaying. Also Jean created a couple of VTP lines for edging the reefs, these are coralsu.bmp & waveshoresu.bmp. These are all provided in the zip. If they are not located by the game when the scenery bgl calls for them, it will display a solid colour square, which is what you show.

The zip contains matching sets of textures to be put in your CFS2/ TEXTURE & CFS2/sSCENEDB/ WORLD/TEXTURE folders, make sure you did this. This is very important.

If you did load matching textures to the correct locations, my next guess is the scenery priority is wrong.

In the game scenery library, the order reads (Top to bottom)

any add on airfields (including MR Micronesia)

ATOLLS

ISLANDS

STOCK RUNWAY EXCLUDES (if needed)

Hope this helps.

First at all , i really apreciate your help, and thank u very much .
Like i said before, this only hapen to me in the Maskrider bases. In the rest of pacific i had not problems, and i get better scenery without doubt.
I did all i had to do like the tutorial say, and i have installed all things in the addon indeed.
I believe like u said , i have some type of conflict ,but i don´t know where. But i´ll repeat the process and we´ll see!
Thanku again!

I agree with MR,great and outstanding job.

I redid my Truk ports and facilities to fit the new scenery, now I have to redo my ship layouts and a couple of Truk missions I've working on.

I'm having Caroline Islands problems - help?

It's a great scenery add on but I am having problems with the mesh matching the textures. Fix suggestions would be much appreciated.

Also, the add on sea textures clearly don't match the rest of my sea textures. Which water textures are the correct ones to use?

Hi CK,

The scenery is designed for a stock install with Rhumbas mesh added, without watermasks.

The scenery cfg shows you have the watermasks enabled, first step is to disable these & see if that changes anything.

I agree, the mesh doesn't look like it matches at all well, so I wonder if you have installed all of Rhumbas mesh. I can only see the LOD 8 mesh in the scenery cfg.

Dick advises installing his LOD 5, LOD 7 & LOD 8, & that is what I have done to my stock install. I recall the LOD 5 being installed to the CFS2/scenery base folder, & I recall there is a significant amount of replacing/ making obsolete of stock bglsfiles, especially the stock coaslines & LOD 9 meshes, as they're inaccurately placed. It may be some of these LOD 9 meshes that is causing the problem.

EDIT: I looked through the old mesh readmes & think some better clarity is required:

As part of the install for Rhumbas watermasks you deactivate a swathe of files from the CFS2/SCENERY folder. From the readme...

"As the default shorelines, roads and streams will no longer fit, it is recommended to rename their file extension name as OLD to deactivate them.
Those defaults are located in:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator 2\SCENEDB\world\scenery"
and are named as 'pac????p.bgl'. ( Rename to 'pac????p.OLD' )"

What I can't find any notation of in any of the mesh readmes, but I do remember doing at the time, is to also deactivate all of the stock games' LOD 9 mesh. You need to do this because these will now be in the wrong place for the new more accurate mesh.

I will create a complete filelist later, once I'm home from work, but these files are named like "saipan9.bgl, guam9.bgl etc" so are quite easy to spot. They are in the CFS 2/SCENERY folder.
Jean's original Truk package also had a LOD 9 mesh file, this needs removing as it's slightly off location, because Jean made it to fit the old stock game mesh.

The scenery also ships with a complete set of water textures, further developed from my recent Pacific Blues revisited set. Key to developing the "look" is making use of how CFS 2 blends different water textures as they're laid over each other in the different scenery layers, & that's why the hierarchy is important.

Obviously if people want a different look, they first need to develop different texture sets. It can be done, mostly by renaming existing bitmaps. Just follow the placements as per this scenery & you'll get an appearance that you like.

However, to get the best out of the scenery as shipped, you need to install the complete set of water textures & shoreline/ wave breaker lines.

If you install the complete set of water textures to both CFS2/TEXTURE & CFS2/SCENEDB/WORLD/TEXURES, you should get a better appearance.

Hope this helps.

Caroline Islands

Great scenery guys. I don't know whether to bomb it or reach for my deck-chair!

UncleTgt,

Thanks for the quick response. I do have the LODs installed and the all pac????p.bgl files deactivated as you say. I also have all of the water textures supplied with the download have been added, overwriting the originals. Both the Scenedb/world/texture and the CFS2/TEXTURE files are matched.

But I'm glad you remembered something about the stock LOD9 mesh. The stock LOD9 mesh files were still in the Scenedb/world/scenery folder. I hadn't seen anything about removing those before.

I was leery of taking out all of them so I decided to take them out one at a time starting with the Truk9.bgl. :jump::jump: BINGO! :jump::jump: That solved all the problems instantly. (including the water, though I have no idea why that would be affected, but it solved it)

Now it looks like the masterpiece it is. Thanks!

CK,

Glad you got it sorted.
:applause:
Interesting about the water textures though, wouldn't think a mesh bgl would affect things like how textures show.

Thought it would be useful to summarise the deactivated bgls from my otherwise stock install. A text File is attached.

Obviously any/ all of the pacific island atolls can now be reproduced using this method...

... question is, where to next? :icon_eek:

Small gsl update

Sorry guys, I'm not so good with gsl work.

I found a rogue stand of palms offshore in a bay just North of Kolonia on Yap. I've updated the zip, but for those who've already downloaded the file, I've attached a copy of the updated gsl file here.

EDIT attached small zipfile instead

UncleTgt or anyone,

Any idea what I am missing? I have been playing with the installation order and reinstalling the scenery but no matter what I try the water texture still covers these land areas.

Hi Voyager,

My guess is you have Rhumbas watermasks enabled, & they're high enough up the scenery library to show...

The readme says it's for a rhumba mesh with his watermasks deactivated, as they're too aggressive. AS a quick check, if you do have the watermasks installed, just deactivate them, then go fly & see if it makesa difference to what you see.

Hi UncleTgt,

I didn't have te watermasks installed. Yap seems to be the only place that I am having this problem. I finally removed all the addon scenery and cleared the .dat files and still have the water texture showing. At this point I will just do a completly fresh install instead of going nuts trying to findwhat I don't know I am looking for. I'll let you know what happens. It is GREAT scenery.

Hi Voyager,

Looking again at the pics, I think the Yap LC bgl is missing. I checked the zip & it's there in the Caroline Islands/Scenery folder. Check you have it in your scenery.

I'm away from home at the moment, when I get back I'll check out the bgl just to make sure it's the latest one.
