Checking out Linux

I have been playing around with the 2009 version of Mandriva Linux with the GNOME desktop for about a week now. I have to say it is the easiest Linux I have tried.

Installed easy, updates easy, and adding most software has been very easy once I learned where to look. Just tell it to fetch and it downloads and installs your choices from a long list of software. Even my employees think it is at least as easy to use as XP.

You can even try it without making changes to your computer. Burn it to CD and it will run from the CD.

I think we are going to switch all of our non-gaming rigs over to it, and if I could run my games on it I would ditch Windows completely.

If you are thinking about changing from Windows and not into a lot of gaming you might want to check it out.

RickN,
Like Ickie, I've been using Ubuntu for a couple years now. Very user-friendly.
I started my Linux education with Mandrake (now Mandriva). I didn't like the semi-commercial direction that Mandrake was heading (like Red Hat did) so I started monkeying with Debian and the various live CDs like Knoppix and Ubuntu. Ubuntu kinda stuck with me as a good "flavor" and I've been happy with it. I did grab the freebie Mandrake live CD for 2008 but never did play around with it much...it looks to have matured quite a bit since I last ran Madrake back in 2002.

Many of the Linux distros have finally incorporated an automated update feature, which is one of the biggest things that I've seen scare folks away from trying Linux.

Enjoy!
