New Zealand GP driver Chris Amon succumbed to cancer yesterday, aged 73. A superbly talented driver - if not the unluckiest driver ever to race, rated alongside Clark and Stewart for sheer natural ability. Considered the best driver never to have won a F1 GP, although wins at Le Mans, Daytona, the Tasman Championship and 8 non-championship F1 races, Mario Andretti once remarked - "if Chris became an undertaker, people would stop dying". Works driver for Ferrari, March and Matra, he finally quit in 1976 and went back to the family farm in New Zealand.
A quiet sense of humour and a true gentleman (I'd met him a few times over his early career), RIP Chris.
