Gizmo

Terry

SOH-CM-2016
What is the gizmo the guy in front of the left gear is using. Some say it cranks up the bomb but on the end it looks more like an impeller for a pump or blower?

Im just guessing..but id say it is for lifting the bomb just from where he seems to be looking..he appears to be looking at,or watching what the guy with the bomb is doing.

The good old crank, as this much clearer view shows.

unless I am mistaken, modern day Ordies still have similar equipment, don't they?

IYAOYAS!

Yes we do, I'm not sure of the designation today but in the days of my misspent youth it was known as an AERO 7 hoist. I used them on the P-3 and F/A-18 as well as the A-6. These were used to hoist weapon in place that was too heavy or awkward to load by hand. Today and then we usually hump, load, a weapon using 4 AOs up to 750lbs, the MK 83. ( BTW, it is pronounced "mark" not "em-kay" like you here on TV. ) As for the hoist in the above pic it is an HLU-288 according to a member on the Aviation Ordnance Shack Face Book page.

As for the the weapons pictured, the one going into the TBM/TBF is a 250 lb class and the one on the SBD appears to be a 500 pounder. Hope this helps out Terry and you know what they say about me and my fellow AO's Dev One? Strong Back, Weak Mind :dizzy: That's not the case but we are a labor intensive rate, but I would never want to be known as anything but an AO

IYAOYAS!!!!!!!!!

I've had that site bookmarked for years and not because I'm an AO, it is a great resource for model and diorama builders too.

As for the hoists, like I said when I was an AO3 even in the 3&2 manual it was referred to as the Aero7 it was not until the 90's did it change to the HLU-288. I didn't see or use an HLU-196 until I was assigned to Station Weapons at China Lake in the early 90's. As I said, we didn't use those hoists that often, in P-3s it was to lift torps mines and depth charges and on the Hornet and Intruder it was to lift anything over 750lbs.

We phrog mechanics used this very same bomb hoist to install our GE T-58s and aft transmissions...a very versatile tool
