Rise of Flight has a Free Demo for people to try.

Not a bad WWI sim IMHO.

Made this video after I download the Demo.

The first thing I liked about RoF was the Force Free Back.

Actually this is even better at the moment. That "demo" is a currently full game with all the features but with only two unlocked aircrafts: SPAD 13.C1 and Albatros D.Va. Having SPAD, you can enjoy a Career mode in any French squadron from the Fall 1917 until the armstice. You can also fly in one of the US squadrons from the mid 1918.
What also works is the multiplayer and the Training Campaign.
The addon planes are cheap when compared to the payware addons for the FS series. What is more, you get discounts the more planes you will order in one time.
