Me-262

I just recieved word today that the Collings Foundation has received the donation of a Me-262 Schwalbe, an actual dual cockpit version. The aircraft will be joing the Wings of Freedom Tour in 2009 at many locations. She will be accompanying the B-17G, B-24J, TP-51C on the national tour. Plus.. flights will be available, but the cost is unknown to me at this time.

I hope you get out to see this rare aircraft as she is the only flying Me-262 in the US. And hopefully it will be here at New Castle next August for our tour stop. Now you know what my next ride will be.

Hello..! NOBODY else wants to subsidize the first jet fighter EVER? Weh und Woe!!

The first new build out of Seattle was a two seater and went to a private owner in Arizona. My money says it's the same one.

Edit: Just took a peek over at the Stormbirds site and they're saying the third and final flying new build Me 262 is to go to the Collins Foundation. It's going to be a "convertible" version that will be able to be changed from a two seater to a one seater and back.

Could possibly be the same one Willy. All I can say from the info I have from Collings is that it has taken 14 years to restore it. Do you know the name of the private owner in Arizona? I check it with the name I have and see if it's the same.

Now you've got me wondering. My info says nothing about Stormbird's final 262 or theirs coming from them. This one tho was converted from the Jumo engines to the same as in a T-38. Maybe Collings is getting a second 262......

Here's some quotes from the Stormbirds site...

"White 3" emerges from the Hangar! Legend Flyers pulled out Messerschmitt 262 “White 3” for some sunbathing in the spring weather. The canopy for the single seat version is nearing completion and engines are nearing installation. It is possible that the Me 262 could be flying this summer, and MAYBE, just maybe even be available for the Gathering of Mustangs in Columbus, Ohio in September. You can be one of the first to ride in the Me 262 with the Collings Foundation.

"WHITE 1" DELIVERED! Judge Lou Werner, the owner of White 1, took delivery of his aircraft this weekend. Test pilot Wolf Czaia gave Judge Werner a ride in the back seat on Saturday afternoon. Following the 35-minute ride, Judge Werner commented that he thought it was great.
White 1 was the first new build Me 262 delivered and it's a regular Me 262B two seater

White 3 is to be the third delivered (the second went to the Messerschmitt Foundation in Germany) and is to be a convertible from one seat to two and back.

I think they've been working on the new builds for about 14 years now and they use a modern jet engine although I can't tell you the exact model. I've been following the new build project since it moved to Seattle from Texas.

Great news - each year The Collings Foundation own "Wings of Freedom" tour keeps on getting better and better.:)
Regarding the ME262 Have a look at the Stormbirds front page - http://www.stormbirds.com/project/index.html

It's not yet announced on TCF's front page. I wonder if the official announcement will be made soon.
Some information about the CF ME262 is posted here - http://www.collingsfoundation.org/ma_me262program.htm
Detailed specs - http://www.collingsfoundation.org/ma_me262_specs.htm

Willy, that's the man.. Judge Werner. CF gave only a part of the info in the newsletter I have on the planes history. Nothing was mentioned about Legend Flyers and the work they've done. Why I don't know. Plus they made it sound like this was an original 262 and not a new build.

Sorry on my misrepresentation of it. :redf: My info came from the CF Winter Newsletter for 2008-2009. Maybe they didn't want to let the cat out of the bag too soon either.

Either way, I think they've got a good idea going with a Me 262. The one belonging to the Messerschmitt Foundation is very popular at Air Shows in Europe. I've been wondering what was up with the Judge's 262 as news on it has been pretty much non-existent since he took delivery a few years ago.

When and if they get to an airport near you Willy, make sure you get out to see it and the others. And if you don't have a tour near you or a co-ordinator for for one, you can get in touch with CF and become a tour stop co-ordinator. Let me know and I'll help you out.

I just got a new email address that you can use. PM if you want and I'll pass it on to you. ;)

I just got this in my email box today.

The Collings Foundation will be offering the opportunity for private individuals to fly in this legendary jet! This is an incredibly rare opportunity for both pilots and non- pilots to experience this jet from the most thrilling vantage point: the cockpit! The Foundation's Me-262 is a dual control aircraft. Holding true to "understanding through experience" - participants will be able to get some "stick time" in this amazing jet fighter. The Me-262 is scheduled to join the Wings of Freedom national tour in April. Stop dates and times will be confirmed within the next two months.
Me-262 Flight Training: $3,400 (approximately 45 minute flight).

Yall do know that one has been buggered up on a landing before? Went off the runway into a ditch during flight testing.

Maybe John can back me up on this, but this deal has been in the making for some time I do believe... I remember someone mentioning a long time ago, maybe early last year, that they were trying to work out some kind of deal like this.... Can you imagine coming up on '909' and zooming past and away in that thing.... awesome.... now I need to start playing the 'ole lotto...
