131 If you were told to join a ship at Pompey, to what port would you go?

Portsmouth

132 Why is it so called?

Haven't got a clue

133 How many Wrens are employed as typist at the Admiralty? :typing:

All of them - seriously. Even those performing duties as aides & assistants where required to type.

If the book is referring to the actual physical number of Wrens ...... see answer 132

134 What is a "tickler"?

A specially configured device utilized & worn by seamen "on leave" to contain their semen, specifically to prevent the spread of STD's.

Generically speaking: a prophylactic with a feather attached ....

138 Which aircraft-carrier was called after a bird of prey?

Actually there are 3: :argue:
HMS Eagle

HMS Osprey
HMS Albatross

I stand firmly on this answer as your questions book may be incomplete
(as it was prolly written by an RN swab who was drunk on grog most of the time.....like me an' you)

The "Accipitdae" family of "birds of prey" includes: hawks, eagles, buzzards and Old World vultures

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_of_prey

-
look um up :costumes: and compare to the RN carrier list for WW2.

But I would concede he was probably referring to HMS Eagle

139 When did the Admiralty take over the Fleet Air Arm from the RAF?

May 24 1939 (an anniversary of Queen Victoria's birthday)

- "brownie point" awarded here ..... 'scuse me whilst I wipes off me nose....

131 Portsmouth.

132 The author has never been able to discover, and if you know, would be glad if you would tell him.

133 None.

134 A home-made cigarette.

135 HMS Royal Sovereign.

136 A Fleet minesweeper.

137 Because she belongs to the last coal burning type in the RN.

138 HMS Eagle.

139 31st May 1939.

140 A naval dockyard (Devonport).

For Capn Organ....

Well yer got 2 an a'bit right so yer was sober at some stage. Shame yer didn't check the names in 138, you would have found that one is a shore establishment and the other a seaplane carrier.
