Newbie questions on sceneries

I just re-installed Version 2.5, because neither FSX nor FSX_SE can run with the DirectX 12 that comes with Windows 10.

I would like to get my scenery looking as good as it was in FSX. Normally that would mean installing Ultimate Terrain X Canada and USA, as well as various freeware and payware airports.

Well, UTX Canada is not available for P3D, although UTX USA is.

And I have no idea how to install scenery packages that were created for FSX. There's no "Addon Scenery" folder, for example.

So, what suggestions do you have for improving the look and accuracy of North American scenery in Prepar3D?

First of all, you will most probably need the fsx-p3d migration tool sooner or later.
Next, you can make an addon folder whereever you want in your system. I have my P3Dv2.5 on a SSD and my orbx and addon scenery folders on another harddrive.
From there on, it depends on money and where you fly. North America is very big. Do you want to fly it all??:untroubled:

The only alternative for UTX Canada that I know of is ORBX base and vector. The big problem is that ORBX has totally lost track of what they are doing. They promissed an OpenLC for North America in 2013/2014 and its never been made and I´m beginning to have my doubts. They are just spitting out small airport sceneries these days. (do they need fast money?)
Without the Landclass, its a bit so so to say the least.

If you mainly fly Alaska, British Columbia, the rockies, pacific north west, the ORBX region scenery packages are very good and IMHO way better than UTX. You can add airport scenery to both global and the regions, but in the regions its not really nescesary unless you fly a lot to a certain airport because the regions have airports and airfileds whitch are already well done.

And finally, if you are interested in something different, try the NZ south Island region when it comes on sale. Its very nice.

Where can I find that tool?

Do you mean I can create an "Addon Scenery" folder under Prepar3D v2, and add scenery packages there? Then, what do I do?

The Estonia migration tool can be found here:

http://www.flightsim.ee/products/migration-tool

You can indeed create yourself an "Addon Scenery" folder and install scenery files manually there. This could be useful even for FSX scenery installers that lokk for this folder. Otherwise you can use any other folder to install the scenery files and then look for them in the scenery library.

The migration tool is a good thing if you don't understand the folder hierarchy of P3D but if you do don't spend your money and just put a little effort into it. You will accumulate knowledge and be better off for it.

Bashing developers seems quite popular in these forums but please get your facts straight before posting BS and check out the latest Orbx OLC NA preview, they are about to enter beta: http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/100340-first-ever-alpha-screenshots-of-openlc-na/

hschuit, first of all thanks for the link. Its appreciated. Its been a loooong time since I heard about OpenLC NA. last time I heard about it (in february), it was said that it would go into beta-testing in march. So now they are in Alpha, which means before beta. It means going backwards in my world and I want to see the finished product before I believe anything about OpenLC NA. Its not the first, second, third or whatever time they talk about it being finished. and every time.. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Besides, you are not being fair, and you cut one part out of my reply and hides the other part, where I actually advice the thread starter to buy and use ORBX. I wouldnt exactly call that "Bashing developers". But you may have your reasons to turn what I said into bashing.... (its as you say also "very popular")
I just found it to be relevant to tell the thread starter that since he wants North America sceneries, the situation with ORBX OpenLC is the way it is.
I hope the product will be a good one. OpenLC EU is decent. In many parts of Europe, its the best we´ve had and clearly better than UTX1 (I havent seen utx2)
