Noorduyn Norseman

While I was looking through all my books for information on the Beech C45 I was working on a repaint of I cam across such an interesting picture of this (to me) little known workhorse of WWII. I decided that I wanted to do the repaint so I Googled it for FSX and came up with a nice model. Though its nowhere as sophisticated as the Carenado's or the other paywares, it is a really nice effort for a special aircraft. First I want to thank all the people who from the start contributed to its existance:

First, Brian Gladden who created it for FS2002; then A.F. Scrub so well know here, who updated it for FSX. John Sylvester for the sound and a repaint and Michael Pook for the new VC and modified Beaver 2D panel as well as smoke, camera configuration and interior enhancements.

A little history...
The Noorduyn Norseman is a Canadian single-engine bush plane designed to operate from unimproved surfaces. The partial streamlining of the landing gear, in the form of two small "wings" extending from the lower fuselage, is a distinctive feature of the design which makes it easily recognizable.
Originally introduced in 1935, the Norseman remained in production for almost 25 years with over 900 produced. A number of examples remain in commercial and private use to this day. Norseman aircraft are known to have been registered and/or operated in 68 countries throughout the world and also have been based and flown in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The Noorduyn Norseman was built from 1935 until 1959. They have been used all over the world in both civil and military roles. With the outbreak of war in Europe, demand for a utility transport led to major military orders. The Royal Canadian Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces became the two largest operators; the RCAF ordered 38 Norseman Mk IVWs for radio and navigational training for the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. In postwar production, the Canada Car and Foundry in Fort William, Ontario acquired rights to the Norseman design, producing a version known as the Norseman Mk V, a civilian version of the wartime Mk IV.

I found a reference to a thread here by Paul Dominigue who had started what looks this Norseman but can't find where it was ever finished he saying that other aircraft had taken a preference. My download is from Flyaway simulation with the super sound package of real recorded Norseman engine. It's called:
fsx norseman update and its 37.7MB with the sound package included. There are also updated gauges file as well as a float version.

The picture I found is on page 81 of Squadron/Signal Air Force Colors Vol. 2 ETO & MTO 1942-1945 by Dana Bell. It is from my reference library back when I created plastic aircraft in IPMS in Chicago longer than I will say. LOL! The Norseman in USAAF service was known as the UC-64 and this repaint served in the 362nd Fighter Squadron-357th Fighter Group-Eight Airforce in 1945 Europe. What caught my eye was the noseart Spirit of St. Louis and the checkerboard cowl which I have never done before.

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php/92922-Paul-Domingue-WRT-Noorduyn-Norseman is the thread here from 2015

http://www.fs2000.org/2016/09/02/fsx-noorduyn-norseman/ this is where I downloaded the latest version with gauges and sound package.

It is not 2018 state of the art in the VC department but since I have only done 2D cockpits and don't know how to do a VC it's better than I could have done. The exterior is nice. Passenger door doesn't work though. The texture I modified to make this repaint is the Norseman at the US Air Force Museum with a red tail but the museum has emblems on it this repaint doesn't. The commercial repaints are very simple without any shading like this.

Maybe with this post one of the designers who "lurk" LOL here will pick up the torch and do a 2018 version. For now this does work nicely in FSX.

WOW

I wish that someone would pick it up and do a really bang up job on one to today's standards too. Looking at the legs of the people in your picture didn't realize how big it is. We have an AT6 Texan at my local airport and after C172's it's HUGE. Nice pictures thank you for sharing. There are very few really good ones on line when I looked for them when I was doing this. Thanks Pam

Richard

That's a much overlooked aircraft! I always liked the Nordyn Norseman because of it's size and brute look (and also the name). Thanks for bringing this up.

Cheers,
Mark

Aeroplane Heaven

Is that wishful thinking or a suggestion about Aeroplane Heaven? Just checked their products and they have an L-5 Stinson but no Norseman. It would be nice if they would decide to do one. I checked out the VC in this one last night and the panel is quite nice and totally customizable. I have the FSDev Bendix King Gauge package and I replaced all the default ones with those which function just like the real ones and also replaced the GNS500 default with the freeware Basler GNS530 which I like so much better. Now its time to fly later. I'll do a PIREP in this thread later after I "put it through the paces" from my home field.

Either One

A2A? now that would be nice..

I would like either one but I think there is a lot more chance of AH doing it than A2A because of the popularity of the aircraft. Either one would be tremendous though. AH would probably be gentler on the wallet LOL.

I got a few pics of the real thing if it helps...

Love to see one in FSX.

........Ahhh.....that'd be the flight deck of a rare four engined Norseman.........:mixed-smiley-010:

Here's a link to a regular single engine Norseman....including an image of what might be the most prefect & shiny panel I've ever seen on one of these......

Looking back into the cabin (cavern?) makes you appreciate how much fish one of these planes could haul.....

Hahaha.. Sorry about that. The cockpit is from the museum's Vickers “Viscount” 757. I thought I took one from inside the Norseman. Well, enjoy it anyway.

Probably because it was late

I just noticed that the prop tips are RED not yellow as they should be until problably if I remember the 1970s when they were changed at least in the USN to Red White Red. The prop DDS is ONLY the spinning prop circle with a slim red circle on the edge. Even if I were to change that, the prop is in the model. Anyone here know how to change the red to yellow? The original README says that Stephen Grant did the spinning prop bmp; A.F. Scrub updated it the aircraft from FS2002 to FSX. Michael Pook (just got an email from him this AM) did enhancements it also says and he says modding it and distributing is ok as long as he gets credit for what he has done. So... can anyone here fix those prop tips and the prop bmp?:dizzy:

here was someone who was planning a norseman a few years back,he told me that he stopped the project because he couldnt find enough of the proper information to do it justice,im not an aircraft maker,so i dont recall what all it was he needed, but he just didnt have it...and ,im sorry, but i just dont recall who it was id been talking to.

This gentleman maybe? His end of this thread was he was more interested in other aircraft. As was said above, I believe there is plenty of information now so maybe Aeroplane Heaven or Golden Age Simulations will pick up the ball and run with it. If GAS built the Norseman like they are doing their new Stearman (thread here elsewhere) Would it be fantastic!!!!!!! I tried modeling but its just way over my head. I have enough trouble trying to do a credible repaint.

That would be a done deal for me. Since I have a very soft spot for everything around Air America, I instantly would make a repaint for it. The are indications that AA operated a few of them, like

44-70378 Noorduyn Norseman UC-64A, c/n 643

or

N3099 Noorduyn Norseman, c/n 643

in Laos. Please, someone, bring it on!

Cheers,
Mark

There is a blast from the past.... The model in that shot is my Ancient Norseman I made back in the days of FS 2002!!!!

That it is still usable in FSX/P3D is quite amazing....

Gratefully

Brian,

Thank you from all of us who have ever flown it in FS2002, then FS2004 and thanks to A.F. Scrub and the other guys I mentioned above that made it FSX'able. For a venerable ol' gal its still serviceable indeed.
