A good thing about a 400 mm lens is the option to keep a safe distance.. :d

Watch for falling fish!!! It's happened before - a water spout will vacuum up a school of shallow-swimming fish and toss them around in the storm's currents before dropping them on the ground, sometimes several miles away!

Tornadoes are spawned from super-cell thunderstorms whereas waterspouts are created by a different set of weather conditions. You can get a waterspout on a fine summer day if the conditions are right. They only appear over water and will collapse once they reach the shore. They are far less violent than tornadoes but can still be a hazard to people in row boats/canoes.

It's hard to tell in Ferry's shot but the general cloud colour and the colour of the funnel look too dark for a waterspout which are usually light grey or white.

wow i thought we (the Midwest US) were the only ones to get tornadoes
They can occur anywhere in the world if the conditions are right but the US Midwest has almost perfect terrain and weather conditions for creating them. Then they come over at us!

We have had 5 in this county alone this year so far and 9 in the Province as a whole. Several of the ones to hit us were in the F1-F3 range and a couple did some very serious structural damage over a large area but thankfully only minor injuries were reported.

country with the highest concentration of tornados per square mile is..... the UK, mostly all very minor, great catch Ferry!

Waterspouts

We get waterspouts on Lake Winnipeg quite regularly. I have seen 2 at the same time. Hot air from over land meets cooler water surface and gets to spinning. Quite an impressive site to be sure. Thanks for sharing Ferry.

Regards, Rob

Pretty sure it were waterspouts, I've seen four or five in a short period. We were waiting for a DC-3 to take-off on a passenger sightseeing flight and we could see the clouds coming in from the north of EHLE over the water.

Got a pretty decent shot of the DC-3 too:
