OT And I thought flightsim was getting expensive

I have to confess to having a 'rather large' interest bubble in AFVs and models, its been ten years since I laid my airbrush and paints to one side and adopted virtual modelling. I've managed to resist pretty much everything the market has had to offer until I saw this

http://www.accurate-armour.com/Show...rer=0&category=14&subcategory=20&product=1600

I do also have to confess that my will is weak, and if I'm totally honest, it will end up in my collection sooner rather than later, as well as an associated trailer load, my current 1/35th Challenger being a little out dated and under detailed for my current standards.

I know others here have interests outside of flight sim, most with model planes, but what struck me, and the reason for this post, was the price of this monster, I will instantly slap down the plastic for this model in an eye blink, yet think twice or even thrice about paying 1/10th of that price for a virtual plane.

I do wonder why people rush to buy Capt Sim or PMDG, especially at todays prices, yet here I sit with virtually no excuse left and a hairs breadth from filling in the order form and sending right now.

Clearly, if its something you really want then price is no obstacle.

Ironically I was looking for its baby brother, which I was fortunate to look over at work whilst they were being shipped out to the Gulf ( attached ).

That's an awesome model. You were lucky though, when I saw they had a Lynx kit I was about to blame you for me shelling out over a ton on it, fortunately it's the wrong version.

Wow Michael, that is a bit pricey, but very cool!

I agree on spending money on things you really want no matter the price at times. I have spent sooooooooooo much on CGI at places like DAZ, and the like that I don't even want to think about it, LOL. They keep sucking me back in with releases of new characters/apps and there goes the credit card again.

I used to build models when I was young and had a huge collection of models, but I much prefer the virtual models now.

Yeah I did see that as well :costumes: !, that'll come later in the year though LOL, mind resin doesnt seem to suit aircraft that well IMHO, not as a primary material anyway.

Yup I got out of real modeling for virtual modeling, but ya know something ?, I still kinda miss it, you dont have to dust them but you cant pick them up either, I've a couple of merchant vessels I want to build as well, there are no kits so it'll be a scratch build in 1/350th scale.

I've got quite the collection of "real" models sitting beside me in my office... very sad how they haven't been touched in soooo long... but.. I've just ordered the Trumpeter 1/16 King Tiger with full interior... and oh boy.. i can't wait... Just hope the wife doesn't think it's her xmas present!

Always liked AFV models myself. Heck, I got more armor than aircraft on display! Sure was a pig in poop when Tamiya released thier M-26 Pershing, T-55, and JS-3.:wavey:
And the Dragon Wagon was worth every penny!
Now about that Fine Molds Millinium Falcon......

To me the Tiger is the most beautiful AFV the world has ever seen! To each there own.:costumes: That HET is very cool, I'd love to build it!

Speaking of detailed models (and the Millenium Falcon), did you see those huge extreme realism X-Wings that that Hollywood model making firm were making that you could purchase?

AFV's are pretty cool. I had made a German 8 wheeler Monogram model when I was a teen. Came with a painting kit tutorial. I remember making little sleeping bags for it out of tissue, folding them up wet, tying with thread, letting them dry, then painting them, washing with dark paint and wiping for highlights, then attaching to the AFV.

I would like to know how those guys painted the metals on the uniforms of those soldiers...! (and eyebrows.. and buttons.. shoelaces.. arrghh).

In my Library I have a 1:192 scratch built model of the USS Alaska, CB1. Not quite finished, but sitting on a nice walnut and birch table built just for it.

Ahhhh, roundtuits.....

To answer the how did they do it question........very carefully and with a very fine brush, lot's of magnification also helps! Detailing is a lot diffrent now than it used to be! Now you can buy decals and even tiny medals for uniforms. Once upon a time it was all your imagination!

I remember stumbling across a fully functional Tiger II in France one day, and nobody in sight for miles. Boy, did we have a lot of fun! I was surprised how easy it was to turn that turret manually, and yes, it did feel good to be standing in the commander's hatch. So, I have a weak spot for Tigers too...and one in 1/16..

y

There was a guy in Australia that actually made a half or quarter scale Tiger tank, (I think it was a Tiger tank). I forget what he used for the engine and all, but he sat in it and drove it around. Pretty wild! (Very large model, lol).

I think it was the site that Michael linked to that had a superb looking model of a WW2 RAF K2Y ambulance for sale. I thought about it, but only very briefly.

Back to my 1:72 Trent (Severn? Can't remember) class Lifeboat and Wessex, I suppose! ;)

It must take them ages to launch from there. You'd think they'd put it closer to the sea!
Any idea where it was going Michael?

That's a Tyne, which was what I originally wanted to learn how to use Gmax to model for some missions, but the RNLI never got back to me when I sent them more information as per their request.

I've always liked the Tyne Class - at least partially because it's the only lifeboat I've ever got truly up close to and had a good look around, when we went to visit the chief engineer of the Tenby Lifeboat. The Severn (it is a Severn, not a Trent, that I have the Airfix model of to build ) is an afloat boat, not a slipway one like the Tyne:

Severn: http://www.rnli.org.uk/what_we_do/lifeboats/current_lifeboats/lifeboat_detail?articleid=44198

Tyne: http://www.rnli.org.uk/what_we_do/lifeboats/current_lifeboats/lifeboat_detail?articleid=44204

While I'd love to say yes to the photos and get cracking on badly modelling a Tyne, it's way off the bottom of the list now unfortunately. The RNLI are (have to be in the modern world) very protective of their identity and image, so I can't release anything including one of their boats, or using their paint, etc. without their permission. To quote the legal guy I ended up talking to, "We don't normally allow our imagery to be used in games".

Pity, but still. If I ever do get around to modelling a rescue boat, it'll be a white and red, or green and gold, generic one.

Edit: Skippy: Scrap, sale, or major overhaul. I'd suggest sale, because a lot of the Tynes have gone overseas after being replaced by newer, much faster, slipway boats. Note that there's no station name above the "Lifeboat" on the stern, so that was a reserve boat anyway, and the fact that all markings have been removed, along with the generally unhealthy looking state of it, show that it has been removed from the fleet. Our local shopping centre had an old retired Oakley on display in the car park for years, but the local yobs decided it would be fun to destroy it. Needless to say, it's not there any more.
