OT: Cell ban pending?

If you're on a USAF base,
You'll get a ticket if you're NOT using a hands-free device with your cell phone while driving...

Hopefully, the "civilian" world will follow the military lead...

Good ole Yurep had this for years...
but its a great source of money for the countries...
..because peole do not always respect that rule.:monkies:

Cheesyflier is right. Hands free or not, it's as bad as being DUI with this stupid distraction.
The other one is the people using them in supermarkets. Why not figure out what they want before they get in the place?
In fact they should ban all cell phones altogether except for dire emergencies. In over 40 years as an Engineer and then in Marketing, traveling all over the world, I never felt the need of having a cell phone.
There always was a phone at the airport or at the hotel. I never missed a call.
When I was a kid you could call anybody using the name of the city and a four digit telephone number. Our's was Salem 0702. A nice operator would take your number and connect you. If the line was busy, she'd call you when it was free. Now I have to use 10 digits to call the next door neighbor because of all the dumb cell phones. At my age try to remember ten of anything. - Even your own telephone number.

100% for it. Agreed with Cheezy on the frikkin' ear bugs and speaker phones too.

yep, same here!! I can't count how many times I almost got into an accident with some idiot on their phone.

had a lady sideswipe my GF a few months back because she was on her phone, I let her have an earfull and so did the cop!

they've banned talking on your mobile whilst driveing over here, and i can tell you know it doesnt make the slightest bit of difference, people just hide it when they see a police car :kilroy:

Totally agree with banning cell phones in cars period. I know myself, I'm a hazard just walking around the house while on the phone.....

From your point of view on the streets, that may be the case, but the entities at the higher levels tracking the accident stats in your country may have a broader and quite different perspective. The numbers tell the real story, not just what we see on the streets. If the national numbers of fatalities associated with cells are lower today than before the ban, that's still progress. Even if the presence of a cop causes a cell-talker to hide the phone, it represents that basic heightened awareness in the general public that the authorities are looking for.

Over time, people who insist on breaking this rule may still develop a keener sense of situational awareness when cell-talking than before the ban and may keep their conversations much shorter and concise than before, because they feel a greater hazard now and also don't want to have a cop sneak up on their six while distracted in a call. This also saves lives...

I live in a college town and there are so many of those kids having accidents due to phone usage in their cars. They hurt and kill eachother and other folks also. I say bring that law on, it's way overdue and ban cell phone from anyone under the age of 21.

There are several oilfield companies that now ban use of cellphones in company vehicles - get caught, get fired and in one case I know, they define the commute to/from work in your personal vehicle as "company travel".

Now that more and more phones have GPS embedded in them it's really a simple step... if the phone is moving more than 4 mph (walking speed) just have it disable outgoing calls and force incoming to the voicemail. The only real pain would be if you are on a boat or train on a commute - but then I wouldn't have to listen to your argument with your boss, customer or girlfriend when you start talking loud enough to not need the phone in the first place.

I realize that people are so much more important today, or so much more insecure that they just HAVE to be instantly available, but... how did we ever survive for the last 100 years?

I totally agree... ban cell phones of any type in a moving automobile. Ya wanna talk.. pull over and stop the dam car. But it'll be just like seatbelts.... some never take to it.

NY put it into law back before we moved south.... 2003 or 2004. Best thing they ever did... and they're still making money handing out tickets for those "hard of understanding".

Delaware on the other hand would have a hissy fit if they couldn't yack while driving. The politicians are just as bad as the common autobird.

The ones that really get me are the ones that text while driving. This is a rural area and we get about a wreck a week from that.

Where I work you are not suppose to have them turned on let alone talk on them.

My wife alost gave me the big one last week... her driving, in a snowstorm, smoking a cigarette ( me choking ), and dialing someone on her cellphone.

We had words. She put away the cellphone... but threw the butt out the window. We had more words.

It was a quiet ride after that, but I'm sure she wasn't thinking about her driving. But who knows, maybe I stopped an accident.
