my grandfather bought two of these in '54..this one is a 1954 Dodge "Job-rated" half ton truck, and he also bought a '56,all three this same color,he got a good deal on the three as a "fleet" for the plumbing company, but the main thing was the local dealer only had the one '56 on the lot..and had about 6 ,'54's ,so he gave gramps a good deal...lol...
Grandpa was driving his favorite 54 back in late 78-79,and he spun a main bearing, the engine siezed and he hit a traffic light standard.he had it towed right to my dads house, which dad was "fit to be tied" over..until gramps said....now its daveys...thing is..i wanted the 57 chevy truck with the big block and 4 speed...nothing doing there though...lol..he had a 55 chevy 3200 long bed with a wrap around rear window, and a 235 straight six, which he later gave to me..after he let it roll down his driveway backwards, drivers door wide open,it hit a wall and bent the door over onto the left front fender and ruined the door,i had to buy and install a new door before i could drive it...
Back to the 54 dodge,i never did restore this truck...it had a hemi in it..im not sure what the displacement was..and im pretty sure it was a replacement engine, but like i said,it had the spun bearing, and pretty heavy front end damage,if you look at the pic,the nose section is a one piece unit, head light buckets, grill and lower valance are all on this piece..it was heavily damaged on my truck and at the time..i couldnt find a replacement...nor did i want to...it was pretty ugly and i didnt like the truck, but it had sentimental value...i learned to drive in this truck,i used to drive it all over the cow pastures behind gramps house, but,i had it stored at my grandfathers old house..which my dad now owned and my sister and mike "the slug" brother inlaw were living there,i made arrangements to sell the truck for $500 to an ex-CHP officer who collects dodge trucks....he and i drove to the house and were going to load it up on a trailer, but the truck was gone,i asked my sister what happened and she said a red towtruck came about a month before and hooked up to it,she went out and asked what was going on,the driver used my name and said i had sold the truck and she just let him take it..didnt bother to call me and ask about it.....when mike thought he was on his death bed a few years later,he admited to many stupid things...but he also admitted to selling my truck, and having it towed away,,,and what did he use the money to buy?.....he bought three 1/18th scale diecast sprint car models.....for himself...at this same time..he told my dad the real reason they hadnt paid rent in more than 9 years, wasnt just because he wasnt working, but what money he did have..went into a savings account they had hidden for his harley...they wouldnt pay rent..came to my folks..his mother, and my apartment to go "food shopping" because they were allways broke..yet he was hording money for a harley that he was to afraid of to ride..odd thing too..it is an old house..needed repairs..but dad couldnt afford it..mikes sister and his mother were allways mad at my dad for not fixing the problems..called my dad a "slumlord" because mike lied to them and told them he paid the rent on time and faithfully.......whatta guy he was.....btw he couldnt read or write..and refused to work..or even look for a job because he didnt want anyone to know he couldnt read.......arrg...
