Allen submitted a new resource:

P-38R Lightning "What If" - P-38R Lightning "What If"

This rebuild of the stock P-38F Lightning converts the Lightning to a "What If". The P-38 with radial engines. Engine cowlings are from the TBD Devastator while the engine and propeller are from the F4F Wildcat as F4F and TBD used the same R-1830 engine but the F4Fs Wildcat engine and propeller have more power. Thanks Allen. This is an interesting experiment.

Lower performance, but no pesky coolant system vulnerable to fire - maybe it couldv'e been a ground attack bird?

Fabulous! Why not a P-49 and a XP-58 Chaingun? A Merlin engined plane could be a MUST!

Cheers

A Merlin looks do able. It would look just like the J/L with less under engine chin. However Merlin with its rear mounted Supercharger is longer than a the P-38s Turbocharged Allison. This means the engines would have to be pushed forward 17 to 19 inches (43.18cm to 48.26cm)

As to why the Merlin would fit into the P-40 and P-51 with minimal changes? Drawing I have for P-40 engine mounts show the Merlin used on the P-40F is shorter than the Supercharged Allison V-1710-F3R used on the P-40D/E and P-51A so there was room to make things fit.

The P-49 could be an interesting addition because it was a REAL aircraft with a promising but underdeveloped engine. About the Merlin engined proposal it would dispense the rear nacelle air entries for the turbo compressor.
