What version of Photoshop, Joe?

Are you using the Pen tool? (In Photoshop 7 anyway) just type P and that will switch to it, otherwise select the pen nib icon in the toolbox.

Actually it's 6.1. But there isn't a nickles worth of difference between this and 7.0. The book I HAD was for 7.0 but it was OK. I bought this copy about 4 or 5 years ago for $50.

I thought you were talking about 'magnetic' Lasso selection tool, but deleted it as I later re-read your question and figured I was way off. Now I think John has it spot on. You want the Work Path tool. There are 4 modes of it; Pen, Add Vertices or dots, Delete Dots, and then Modify mode of the Vertices (handles and things). Hold down the Work Path button, select the Pen, make your dot points. The hold it down and select the Modify mode and then you can stretch out handles on the dot Vertice points.
You may have already re-found this.
For those that didnt know, this form of art is also called Vector drawing by some. You can get super high resolution curves and stripes using this technique and 'Fill' path via Work Path mode. (Dont convert the Work Path to a Selection and do Fill, it will turn out rough edged... Keep the selection in Work Path mode, go into Work Path mode (icon activated), and then right click and Fill).

Yep, PSP has the same tool, called something different, but the end result is a vector graphic that you can apply a contrasting line to the fill area so you have a fill and an different color outline all in vector. Very handy for applying precise graphics to fuselage, wings, etc.:salute:

I'd like to find someone with a later version to upgrade. I got 6.0 by buying it after a friend upgraded to a later version. I didn't know what I was buying at the time, just that it was a really great Graphics Program.

I got the newest Photoshop for Mac OSX, the $100.00 version. Its nice looking, but it seems like my 6.0 version does things easier. For instance, I cant resize a picture in the new PS. That was really upsetting. Maybe I am just doing something wrong. If I want to resize something from 2048 pixels to 1024 pixels, it has every form of measurement, including some new ones I havent heard of, and pixels arent in there anywhere... And you resize the photo or graphics and it doesnt show. Strange...

Joe, I respect your many abilities and your contributions to the Sim Community. I also respect your right to an opinion, but really, that's hogwash. It's what you're used to my friend. I am used to Paint Shop Pro and there is nothing difficult about layers in PSP. So you go with what you think is best, I will go with what I think is best.Ed .... I find it just a tad insulting (to the product, not me) that PSP is looked upon by the majority it seems as a "throw away" program, not worthy to even be spoken about in the same breath as the all mighty Photoshop. Hogwash.
If you are accustomed to PSP, if that's what you've used from the start and you understand the tools and what they're capable of, then it is every bit as good as Photoshop. Use what you are comfortable with, if that's photoshop, great, but let's not put it on a pedestal. It's just another graphics program.

I find it much easier to just click on the list of layers than having to do a drop down and then choosing the layer. Maybe PSP has upgraded to a listing of layers as Photoshop has but the PSP programs I have don't have that. I'm not insulting the programs, I use mine all the time. Just don't use them for skinning. I think if you perfer to use PSP then by all means do it.

You can have the little boxed list of layers in PSP just like in PS. It's there in 7 and 8.1 (the two old versions that I've got...also have X2). IIRC, they default to that drop down list but you should be able to dock it and/or push-pin it so it stays displayed.
BUT...by all means use what you are more comfortable with! There's nothing wrong with Photoshop except for that pricetag! (and you can get around the pricetag by using PS Elements...pretty sure that's what Bill is speaking of)
I have both CS2 and CS4 but I still need to learn my way around them better. I'm just not real familiar with em so my preference is still PSP.
BUT...on the other hand...or maybe it's the same... The tools in PSP X2 are laid out way differently than my old version of PSP8.1 so I'm finding myself lost at times in that one too.
I just need to spend more time in both programs to set up the tools and save them in a layout that I like.
BTW, I moved this down to the Painters forum too. Might catch the eye of others with similar problems or tips on yours.

Just spotted this and wanted to throw in my 2 cents worth.
I use PSP7 exclusively and have done so for many years. All of the personal repaints and textures from the ground up that I've done for Alphasim have also been made using PSP7. In fact, the paint kits included in Alphasim releases that I painted were made in PSP7 and saved off as PSD format for the downloadable paint kit. I test load them into Photoshop 6.1 (I do have a legit copy I bought second hand but just never bothered to learn since PSP worked for me). I also have a copy of PSP8 but only use it for those PSD texture sets that fail to open in PSP7. I simply resave them in a compatable format and get back to work.

I'm not that enthused about any version of PSP after 8, once Corel got their hands on PSP they dumbed it down for the 'Happy Snaps' crowd.
I have PS CS4 and Lightroom 2.7 which I'm still grappling with..........
Decided to go the Photo Shop route as there are some specialised plugins available that allow me to work with the file formats in several Race Sims.
For example, .pssg, .bsf, .veh, .pm and a number of others that are out of left field.
My 'L' plates remain fixed firmly in place ...................
Whatever works for the person concerned is 'best'.
