Question about sound files

Back here again, on a new project some may already know about, and a question has come up.

You may have downloaded and installed one or other of the DL versions of various aircraft, particularly the late Bf109 series, and used the included gunfire sound updates. The problem is that CFS3 sometimes reads them and you get the effects I'm looking for, and then again, sometimes it doesn't, and the result is silent guns. As CFS3's original gunfire sounds are generally weedy in the extreme, this is important to me.

These files are all in PCM 22.050 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo format, which matches CFS3's original files. I cannot find the reason why they don't play systematically.

Can anybody help?

It sounds like possibly a case of duplicate files hiding out somewhere in your install?

No... Checked wav file names, sound alias names, the works. I am utterly stumped.

Did you search for files throughout the whole of the install using something like the notepad++ file search feature? I sort of assumed you did.

This may not be the situation you're experiencing, but I believe that CFS3 has a limit on the number of sound channels that can play at the same time. If the limit has already been reached when the gun firing sounds are triggered they may not play. If that is the case then a few moments later when the other sounds have played out, and that channel is released they should work again.

Does the failure to play come and go within a session, or is it all or nothing?

All or nothing. Basically, no non-stock gunfire sounds seem to work. Everything else does.

That includes the guns for the Me163... The SJ aircraft guns don't work either. There's a thing.

I'm stumped.

That's really strange. Know the files themselves will play in CFS3. Is anything messed up in your sounds.xml?

Not that I can find... It was working again the other day, just briefly - I'm always opening and closing in order to make adjustments to things I'm working on. But now it's back to not working.

One thing I'm going to try is using a vanilla sounds.xml and adding only those lines I want to use here. If it works systematically, then I'll need to look further.
