According to Roger Freeman, in "Thunderbolt: A Documentary History of the Republic P-47", the two XP-47H airplanes began on the Evansville, Indiana, production line as P-47D models. Freeman wrote that creation of the H model entailed redesigning the aircraft forward of the firewall, with new duct work to the General Electric CH-5 turbosupercharger and modifications to associated equipment, including intercooler outlet doors. The XP-47H used a thirteen-foot, four-bladed Curtiss Electric propeller.

The Aircraft
Although the P-47D was the high point of the Thunderbolt's career in terms of quantity and use; there were further attempts to refine the type.

Two "XP-47Hs" were built. They were major reworkings of an existing razorback P-47D to accommodate a Chrysler XI-2220-11 water-cooled inline 16-cylinder inverted vee engine. Really big inline engines didn't prove to be a good idea in general, and the XP-47H went nowhere.

The Engine
The Chrysler XIV-2220 (XI-2220 from 1944) was an experimental 2,500 hp liquid-cooled inverted-V-16 aircraft engine designed by Chrysler starting in 1940. Although several aircraft designs had considered using it, by the time it was ready for use in 1945 the war was already over.
