Clive attented me to this thread (and beat me to it with the plan - yesss, we got one ;)). The ACC is doing a version of Winkleigh for CFS3 and we got the basic layout ready.

Below a WIP screenie - mind you, it's CFS3 and not comparable with the 'civvie' sims :)d), so yours is scenery-wise without doubt gonna look better. Concerning the buildings - although the plan states the building drawing numbers, I am not going to try and reproduce everyone of them true-to-life. Clive convinced me that it is futile for a combat sim to do that as most folks simply take-off (if they don't already start in the air) and want to shoot down things :rolleyes:. Thanks for your comments Frosty, I can take absolutely no credit for this airfield at all, it is all down to Falcon409 and his hard work, all I have done is to try and provide the information he needs to build it.

We have been having trouble trying to find the correct location for the buildings, we know where the hanger and the tower should be but the remainder I think is down to Falcons best judgment, which I am sure will be excellent.

I am hoping Clive will e-mail the plan to me, I have asked the RAF Museum for a hard copy but this may take a while to get.

Here is another link about Winkleigh, be careful though the photo which is captioned 'The main aircraft hangars RAF Winkleigh today' is incorrect, that is in fact the Reynolds Boughton Factory. The one and only hanger, which still exists today and now houses a collection of vintage buses is behind the factory in the trees and it is a T2 hanger.

Yep, I know about that website - got that bookmarked. And that's the map we got , a readable version that is... :d.

To place buildings, we import the map into a painting program and paint on top of that. We then use the resulting .bmp in gmax (3D modelling program that can export to CFS3) to texture a plane the size of the in-game airfield and then we start placing the building models on top of that. This way you can place them very accurately. The gmax model is exported as a .xml file that can be read by CFS3. Combined with the .bmp in .dds format you get a very fine airfield that is pasted on top of the scenery. Any other way is simply trial and error - a rather time consuming business...

So far we have not found a way to easily work a facility into the landclass files - which obviously would give a better blending result and allows for autogen scenery objects etc. to be used on airfields (pasted facilities flatten or remove autogen objects underneath in CFS3). From this thread I gather that this all is very different for the FS series but the gmax trick for placing models (or something comparable) might be helpful.

Oh, and thanks about the T2 hangar. Knew about that and got that one already modelled (the ACC crew combined has quite a collection of source material for WWII UK airfields). I don't know how big the T2 for this airfield was but a 14 bay version fits the groundtexture. It's big enough for the aircraft stationed anyway.
 
I'm going to try and take some more photos today - weather permitting. Tried yesterday afternoon and was very very hazy - could only see a mile or two in any direction.

Any excuse, to go flying! :)
