Texture/Paint question

In the texture below I want to turn the black field surrounding the instruments transparent. I can't seem to do it with photo elements and paint.net turns everything in the file transparent. Can someone please give me some pointers!

I'm not sure how pain.tnet might do it but with dxtbmp, you can cretae an alpha mask to block out averything around the instruments. Maybe try a 128 gray fill around all the instruments. That should be clear in cfs3.
