OK time to don the sou'wester and oilskins for when it hits the fan. When Team SDB parted company with Alphasim and then Skysim we decided it was time to put something back into the FS Community. We now sell our scenery through the retail arm of a well known Freeware
file host. In exchange for 30% of our gross earnings they market and sell our products and answer many
queries.
Now let's say a conservative estimate of total number of developers is 900 and the average monthly gross of each is
$100. (chicken feed) It does not need complicated maths to to work it out. Gross monthly turn over is
$90,000, the store takes $27,000 (30%) that's $324,000 pa. Let's say that the sites cost $200,000 pa. That
still leaves $124,000 pa. More than enough to buy Ickie a new computer every year with a few crumbs left
over.
So maybe the time is now right for The Outhouse Corner Shop. It would be totally self financing and require
no more "cap in hand" collections from members to keep the Freeware site up and running. OK so the purists
here won't like it but principles don't pay the rent.

Team SDB would be the first to offer it's products. It's worth more than a passing thought.

We have this discussion every once in a while. The math is simple but the headaches become much greater. Running a business is nothing like running an non profit website. All the rules are different and we just don't have the manpower or the desire to become a business.

Fair comment DD26 t'was just a thought. Back to killing threads ;)

Seems to me this industry is getting stale....the exuberance of 2004,and to a degree FSX are waning.I detect a continued loss of interest. Most of the posts on most of of the Flight Sim Forums ,are not about Simming, more like a Face Book environment. The avalanche of sales now offered are indicative of that business is falling..Sure for we purists flight Sim will always be with us. What this Hobby needs are new Flight Simulators.Simulators reflecting the newest technology, better Flight controls.a better vehicle for the artists, and designers to apply their talents to..Hell I would not keep a car as long as I have kept these now outdated Sims.Complacency, lack of interest, shrinking profit margins, and a general disenchantment will damage our hobby..If developers see the clamoring for new products ,they will supply..in all fairness however, the "FLIGHT" thing really showed them, that the introduction of new products are a risky thing...We simmers can be fickle, close minded, stuck in the past, and have short attention spans.....Today we have the greatest home desk top Flight Sim Game ever,.I thought that of FS1,FS2,FS3,FS4,FS5,FS5.1,FS95,FS98,FS2000,FS2002,FS2004,and FSX........All this hobby, and industry needs are NEW ,SOPHISTICATED,Flight Simulators...This will inspire new simmers, better computers, and great artists, and developers....Will we ever be satisfied??..Of course not,we demand the best possible.Up till now we seen a progression of Sims..from Green sticks to FSX..But now? We are in a ditch...Who,What,Where Or When will we get out????...We need another Bill Lyons!

Eaglesoft has created DCS World which is so called state of the art. MadCatz has produce Combat Pilot which is a multiplayer combat environment for FSX, and Lockheed has P3D. The sims are there. Whats changing isnt the availability of sims nor the quality of the addons, but rather, we're changing.. We dont need new sims, we need new perspectives. We chase around the same p-51s over and over and over hoping it'll give us that new spark in life but hey, a P-51 is a P-51.. doesnt matter how many you fly.. They're all the same. What needs to change is US. You can only take so many pills before you realize the problem isnt the pill, its the person..
As for addons?/ Yes FS9 was young and exciting, and lacking in SO many ways.. Developers popped up in droves to help fix the problems and develope what has becvome over the years, the most sophisticated, realistic addons you could ever hope for. But perhaps thats the problem. There just isnt enough to complain about any more..
I'll be honest. If i were the only person in the entire world that had Flight Sim, that wouldnt bother me at all. I love flying more than life itself and since i cant exactly go to the airport and rent a plane, I'll stick with flight sim and i'll be here till my last breath.. literally.

It is somewhat of a worry. I cannot recall the last time I saw a MSFS product on the shelves. My local Best Buy the other day had reduced its PC gaming section to approx 6 feet of shelf space, and even then it was sparsely stocked .... and no FSX either.
P3D is not widely advertised in my view, so how are new folk going to come into the market if they don't know about it.
As Private Fraser was fond of saying in Dad's Army - We're doomed. lol

I don't think we (as flight simmers) are doomed. Nor do I think that flight simming will totally die out. There are tons of young people out there who have a fascination with flight....has been since the dawn of aviation....and those who desire to experience flight will find their way to flight simming as their first step toward flying...or as their only means of flying. Has the Hay Day of FS9 gone away....yes. Same for FSX. Prepared (I refuse to lower my IQ by using numbers as letters) is "new"....or it will be once LM has their way with it and does their tweaks and changes....it may become the flight sim that everyone has been dreaming of. Maybe a new flight sim will come along from some new source and blow all of our socks off.

What was this thread originally about anyhow?

I think it was about the price of cod in Nepal Obio!

Was more like The Price Of Rhubarb ,if in a can,and does it need a guy with an umbrella shielding it.from the rain.....In this Mosaic of Babble,There is always room for Nattering Nabobs Of Negativism to be heard...Some things are bigger than the Tunnel vision of one's personnel interests....Tripping over an ant hill while one head is in the clouds is not new....There is a Bigger Picture..and it is the Long term future of our Hobby....Any and all is helpful and informative...The Power of the Open mind is wonderful..and not to be wasted,or ridiculed....Have Fun!..Vin!

It's actually a deliberate conflation of two terms: Prepare and 3D (as in three dimensional).

Frankly, naming it "Professional Flight Simulator" instead would have been clearer as to what the software platform does, but would also have been limiting in that it is truthfully more like a "World" simulator and not strictly limited to flight...

I agree n4gix, but hopefully a new sim that permits everyone to develop the sim in their own way. A closed sim to me is worthless. I got into this because it was an opportunity to mod in your own way and to learn how to create and mod existing parts of the sim. Without this it's just a video game.

Flying is fun, but creating/modding is sheer joy. Just my 2 cents, but that's why cars come in different colors.:guinness:

I've been mucking about with FS9 since it was released. Seems like there's always some new angle to explore.

Ah yes the price of rhubarb and the perrenial question " What do you put on your rhubarb?" A neighbour of mine grows beautiful rhubarb and he put's well rotted horse manure on his. I prefer Bird's Custard on mine.:jump:

I think the humour got lost somewhere mid-Atlantic. Just to put the record straight.

I love rhubarb. I steam in it sugar water until it's very, very tender and sweet. I use it as a compote, or as a stand-alone fruit dessert. :ernae:
