Scimitar by Rob Richardson....

I honestly don't think this model has drop tanks. When viewing the model using ModelConverterX you see no drop tanks. You only see the missiles and rocket pods.

Brian

+1 I saw the same thing. The only indication of an external tank is in the aircraft.cfg.

I think this is the model you are after

Fantastic!

Thanks so very much Sir! My Scimitar now has tanks!!!! Works like a treat, and as always looks absolutely stunning! And not just the Scimitar, but all of your other "children" as well... I've spent a ton of money over the years on payware, but I spend much, much more time in your models than anyone else's... You just made my day, as before returning here I was watching an old RN training video on YouTube... time for me to virtually scrape the paint off of Victorious' deck!

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks Rob!

I must be getting old/rusty - because I get the aforementioned "model not visible" message when I dropped in the new model with tanks. I'm working with the latest model off Rob's website, and I've double-checked that the names/map clearly (model) (vs model.clean) to the model file in question.

Was this only for P3D4, maybe, and not for FSX? I'm also not seeing the refueling probe - I recall something about it being only for P3D also - maybe I'm wrong. Can't wait to try this tanks only model, ideally with the probe, if these indeed are for FSX.

thanks so much,

DL

This little birdie is a fun one to fly. Im not that familiar with the history of the Scimitar, but I do wonder if she flys like a heavy bird (F-4) or more like an A-4. As a two engined aircraft, I would think more like an F-4? Reason for asking is that I think this one currently "floats" a lot. Getting her to lose lift and get down on the deck is a bit different. I did 2 go arounds before getting her cross deck on the Oriskany as a visitor!

If you "float" on approach, I suggest doing some slow flight tests at 5000 MSL over water, practice flying level at steady speed, slowing down in 5 knot increments. When she starts getting "goosey" in lateral control, you are near stall. I project that it is likely that you are a little fast on approach, not flying on the "backside" of the drag curve, which is pretty fundamental for jet carrier ops.

Thanks rob. I downloaded this and installed it, I can see using ModelConvertX that the drop tanks are there but can't get them to show in P3D4.3, is there something else I have to do? Even if they don't show glad to have a clean version rather than an armed version.

Edit: Never mind, I found the cockpit switch that turned it on, the 'Logo Lights' switch on the lower left, thanks!

Joe,

Try hitting the "L" key from within the VC, that should get the tanks to show for you. At least that worked for me in P3D 3.4.

I am curious has anybody tried the tanked version in Fsx yet? does it work? I haven't had chance since,I have been away from my computer for a few days. Thanks

I tried it but get the same model can't be displayed like delta_lima.

On a separate note, can any other users confirm the stall speed with full fuel etc and no flaps is well below 100kts IAS? Also, can anyone confirm the airbrakes cause little deceleration?

I have seen an old RAN magazine article written by a LT pilot saying 130 knots on approach with half fuel, full flaps, flap bleed air on (yes, it used this!), and "boards out". I have to assume this is with no external stores because he was doing CQs. Extrapolating, I have to guess he was saying:

EW = 23, 960 lbs
equipped pilot = 250 lbs (a larger piiot)
1/2 internal fuel = 4275 lbs

So approach weight would be about 28,485 lbs at 130 KIAS on speed. If the RN used USN philosophy, this would be 10% above stall onset, or 118 KIAS.

As a reminder, using speed brakes is critical - it keeps you "spooled up" on the power, makes small power changes more effective in controlling rate of descent, and - PULLING THEM IN ON A WAVEOFF MAKES A BIG DIFFENCE IN WAVEOFF RESPONSE!!. Same if you bolter --

Been there, done that - good normally, not too bad occasionally, ugly - only once.

I have an original Scimitar F1 Pilot's Notes (along with some other original Scimitar air publications) and if someone reminds me I'll get around to checking the numbers...

I also have a genuine Scimitar panel I hope to get around to restoring one day, but that is another story!

Do the notes have any performance charts or tables with speed vs weight vs configuration? Also, max carrier trap weight, vice max field landing weight (usually different)?

There's a bit about deck landing in the Ad-Hoc Publications 'Scimitar From the Cockpit' where a pilot mentions the single throttle technique. Basically you set both throttles at an intermediate position and then only adjusted one of them from then on, essentially it gave finer control as you were only altering the thrust on one engine. It wasn't an approved procedure as such, so wasn't in the manuals, but was in fairly widespread use by all accounts.
