W11 Defender or Norton360

Been locked inside my habitat for quite a while ( computer kaput, finally a new machine ( i9-14900K, RTX 5080, 64GB, W11),slowly but steadily getting it all together again, have first question: Windows11 Defender or Norton 360 (been using it for years, works very well, still have a license but getting a bit sick of constant adverts to buy more :fatigue: ). I read good reviews of W11 Defender. Stick with that only or keep Norton as well ?....

IMHO, stay away from Norton 360. It's a resource hog that actually offers not too great protection.

As for Windows Defender, that has greatly improved over the last few years. For what it's worth, I use ESET Smart Security. Brilliant protection, light on the system and not too intrusive. Added bonus: all your browsers run in sandboxes.

I have CCleaner for years, so that's enough together with Defender, Tiger ?...

ESET scores 8.5 together with Bitdefender at 'Consumentenbond', one of the best. Norton 8.1 together with McAfee. The thing is my Norton licence runs until May 2026. A few extensions included ( about 200 euro per year...) but i can say i have *never* had any problems with virusses, malware, phishing or any other scoundrels. I really only want to get rid of Norton because of the constant adverts. I have Norton on my old system (that went to the dogs a while ago but is fixed so i can move stuff to my new rig) so i keep it for the old system until licence ends and probabely go for ESET on my new machine. ( is that Dutch, Jan ??...)

It is for antivirus protection, I've been using just these two for about 15 years (I also used Malwarebytes for a time but ditched it when they introduced Ads way back). I use Ghostery and uBlock Origin with MS Edge for ad blocking etc., it's all worked perfectly so far **touches wood** lol.

Actually Ccleaner just cleans unwanted things from your rig like cookies, temp files and other things that are left on systems that aren't really necessary. It's not really good at finding and deleting the real nasties. I used Ccleaner for years, but nowadays the diskclean function of Windows together with a decent antivirus/firewall solution do the trick (for me anyway)

Just my two €cents worth.

Like just about everything else (here in the western world..) it's truly a forest of AV programs you'll have to wade through and with every step it gets more vague what's best to go for. :unsure:

@Lawman if i google AV-software the first that turns up as Best is Norton 360...hehe.. 'av-comparatives.org' has Norton at 100% malware block together with Avast and AVG... Very nice and comprehensive AV test site as is 'av-test.org' as well. Thanks very much ! (y)

Btw, what about VPN ??.... I figure this is something on the side, right ? Not integrated with any AV program ? Do i need one ??.....

Like i said earlier, i have had Norton for almost as long as Internet exists (first year or maybe years McAfee..) and have had to wade thru a wagonload of problems with the many computers i owned ( *many* computers just because of Flight Simulator, i can tell you that...;-) but NEVER a problem with virusses or malware or anything like that. Checking all these AV test sites just now it's nice to come to the conclusion that it wasn't such a bad choice afterall.. Still a bit confused standing at the crossroads.... ( i DID notice delay in running standard software Norton has a worse score than most other AV progs ( ESET has the lowest, 5% where Norton has 11%...W Defender 6%...)

Ok, thanks very much again, gents, i'll make a decision sooner or later..

Hi Javis,

VPN is indeed something on the side. Do you need it? Not if your browsers are sandboxed. Also, as it puts a security tunnel in your connection, speed will go down. It all depends on your activities really. But somehow I don't expect you to visit the dark web. :D

Thanks Jan, yes i've read about that 'tunnel', that's why i asked too. New for me is that a browser can be sandboxed ?..... Sometimes i play Transport Fever 2 in Sandboxed mode, it means you have access to everything and can play however you like it, no restrictions. No clue what it means for a browser ...... ( i use Google Chrome for years and very happy with it ) I LOVE the internet, wouldn't know what to do without it anymore, i use it from how to spell words and translating 'em if needed, through watching endless aviation subjects, up until knowing more about all that interests me furthermore and that's a LOT ! (last year i discovered a ton of videos about gorilla families living in zoo's around the world (mostly Japan). You can watch a new born gorilla baby grow up to be a mature greyback, since then I need my shot of atleast one hour of gorilla life each day. Totally hooked ;-)

Darkweb ?.... I've read a few lines about it and that was enough for me. Not interested.

I'm happily sailing and surfing the net for ages now without anything bad happening so i guess i'm Oké without VPN, right ?

Yes you're ok without VPN. VPN is useful for laptop users abroad when having to connect to public wifi's.

A browser being sandboxed means that your browser is shielded from other apps. I.e. malicious software from a website cannot enter your pc. It doesn't change your browsing, it just protects the PC from nasties on the web.

I agree with the WIN 11 Defender and Malwarebytes, lifetime subscription. I ditched Norton about 8 or 9 years ago, got tired of the constant upgrade requirements costing more than I paid for the program, which was, in my book, excessive. Since ditching it, I've had fewer crashes and OOM messages. I'm starting to get upset with Malwarebytes as it has been flagging a lot of known good sites and downloads lately, that I have used for many years.
