PMDG DC-6: Native MSFS 2024 update Out

I never bought this for 2020, but I'm seriously tempted to grab it now. How's she look/fly/perform in 2024?
 
I followed the original thread to here. I bought the DC-6 when it first came out. It was my first and only PMDG aircraft. I am not into airliners, so I don't usually consider PMDG aircraft. However, I do know that they have an excellent rep.

I bought the aircraft thinking I would enjoy old fashion non-GPS flights. However, I found the aircraft too complicated to learn, so after a couple attempts I parked it on the old ramp that use to be a runway, but long abandoned. Maybe, after I get my Moza yoke back in working condition, I will give the old bird another look.

I've only had a chance to do a few circuits with her, but as far as looks are concerned, she is as beautiful as ever, even with her original FS2020 textures. I'll leave you to hunt out screenshots on the web, and see for yourself. As for flying, at the moment, she is extraordinarily sensitive in the pitch axis, totally unlike what you would expect from a large aircraft. I can't remember whether this was the case with the MSFS2020 model. I will have to check my controller axis sensitivity and see if I can sort it out. The sound set isn't much to write home about, but it's adequate. As jmig points out, it is quite a complex aircraft, but you have an automated flight engineer who can be enabled/disabled for each stage of the flight. The manuals provided are comprehensive, and there is a series of excellent tutorial videos from Mr. Randazzo himself on Youtube. Overall, I would definitely recommend it if you like vintage prop liners / cargo hauling.

I didn't find it pitch sensitive, but for the initial flight I took I put it on the AP fairly quickly.
Pleased to find the AP worked ok & it tracked the magenta line. Trick appears to be to activate the various components of the AP in the correct order. I found it by asking Chatgpt.com that specific question & what Chatgpt came up with worked. Flies smoothly & looks the part.
Agree sounds are on the muted side, could do with a bit more rouh radial roar. Interestingly, Redwing came out with their MSFS 2024 Super Constellation a day or so later.
Whereas the DC-6 was a free upgrade from the MSFS 2020 version, Redwing are charging for the Connie, available in the Marketplace.
 
@Killbilly Just for further information, there seems to be a lot of people suffering WASM problems with the DC-6 at the moment. If you haven't bought it yet, I recommend you hold off for a few weeks and see if things improve.

I might have been a little hasty in my assessments. I've just done a few more circuits at Edwards ( KEDW ), which is where I get to know all my add-on aircraft, and my increasingly slack Saitek X-52 Pro is probably a contributing factor. That, and the fact that she (DC-6A) was empty of cargo with half a fuel load, requiring only very small inputs to keep her reasonably steady. An overdue HOTAS replacement is under consideration - Virpil is the most likely option.

So far, I've had none of the problems mentioned by others, though I've just been hand-flying circuits to refamiliarise myself with the aircraft. Very rewarding when you pull off a good landing!
 
I downloaded the DC-6 last night, the first time I tried running it, I experienced a tremendous 3-second latency in all functions. Instrument responses, control functions, all. I found out I had to enable it and after enabling it, the latency vanished, but the click spots were inactive. I had chosen the DC-6 as the first AC to be used this session. Switch behavior was sporadic and non existent in some cases. I read then where one should delete the WASM cache and let the sim rebuild. I did and all seemed to work fine. No latency, all switches functioned and the Comm/Nav systems worked fine. Seems like GPT is our friend. Unfortunately having to perform this deletion before every fight should be unnecessary and a real PITA.:mad:

Just out of interest, which version of the game do you have - Microsoft store or Steam ?
 
Paul, the Steam edition. I have a quick shortcut setup to the WASM folder so that I can delete before selecting the AC. :mad: At least I can delete after the Sim starts, just can't have the DC-6 selected. Still shouldn't be this clunky.

Very odd, and you're right - it shouldn't be this clunky. So far, everything's been fine here, and I'm using the Steam edition too, so another question, if I may - are you using the default location for your add-ons ? Mine is G:\ MSFS 2024 Community Folder\Community, which is obviously a custom location. I wonder if that has any bearing? PMDG is acutely aware of the WASM issue, and they have a thread running, asking people to report their problems. Hopefully, it will help them pinpoint the problem.

No, I'm not using the default. It's in a separate drive with all other MSFS2024 packages. I'll check out the forums.. TY.
 
Just finished the first flight with her. Long haul of 6.5 hours. Two observations so far. The engine startup sequence seems like it is lacking some startup exhaust effects. It also seems like the autopilot is far too easy to accidently disengage while poking around the cockpit. Other than these two things I noticed on the flight, it's nice to have her back.

Paul, thank you for the heads up. I'll fire up the DC-6 after checking out OC-3. Really appreciate the link.

Paul, just a follow-up after trying that update from PMDG. As soon as I updated the AC from OC-3, I loaded it in MSFS 2024. No WASM issues, gust lock removed correctly......but... my camera views were askew and all over the place. Totally unusable. When I tried another AC, same thing. had an issue like that with ATS and took several hours to sort it out. So I tried MSFS 2020.. All went well.. ah, relief. That means it's not Steam or my controllers. Reloaded MSFS 2024, specifically 2024, the DC-6 and all went well. Good fix.. I suppose 2024 got its mind scrambled somehow. This hobby can be so frustrating sometimes...:cry:

Very pleased that you've got everything sorted ! It would have been incredibly frustrating to own such a wonderful aircraft and have constant problems with it.

"This hobby can be so frustrating sometimes." That should be the health warning on the side of the pack. :ROFLMAO:
