Post 17 Warning old domain name stealing credentials

  • Special Server Maintenance

Just when you think you have everything running some what better...

You get a message from the Hosting company. Short story they need to move us to a new server. I have been working with them to plan a good date for all concerned. Here is what we have come up with as a schedule.

    1. November 4th 17:00 -5UTC shut off the forums and start backup proceedures. During this time there will be no access to the forums or the Resource Section.
    2. November 5th Continue with Backups and download same until complete.
    3. November 6th 7:00 turn over server to hosting company to move system to new server
    4. November 7th - 8th restore backups and upgrade forum software.

If all goes well we should be back online on November 8th.

To keep you updated we will post updates on AVSIM forums.

    Thank you for your support.

FlightSim.com is OFFICIALLY Offline...

To be honest, I do agree with the Argument which states: that they bought the Site and so they do have all their rights to do with, whatever the heck they want with… of course! No argueing there…

However, I was a longtime member of Flightsim.com before as well… and i did participate in the Forum activities there too… so there are surely a few discrepancies from what the owners said before.. .as for example: that the downtime would not endure as long as it allready is now.

So, considdering the downtime and counting downtime, i also think, that they have never considdered to really bring Flightsim.com back to life. But rather to let it go down the drain. Also I am not sure if the owners who bought the site are really fluid in finances, but think thei’re gone bankrupt and can’t really finance a further existence of the site. Otherwhise, the Site would’ve allready be back up and running for a long time…. And so, i guess flightsim.com is definitely gone forever and won’t ever come back up again.

Personally, i think, its just sad to see such an important site gone… as it supported so many users for such a long time with rather important files and rather valued discussions and forum activities… - We all appreciated the file hostings and also the familiarity in the forum activities between each users…

Allthough, never say never, if anyone knows better, feel free to correct me on this critique.

For me, SOH has become the new Go-To Site for daily forum activities as well as filebase / downloads. And I definitely will stick around on SOH more actively even if Flightsim.com comes back up to life again. They probably lost my Audience…

Also most of my activity concerning flightsim, is currently based on my two Facebook Groups:

- FS2004 - A Century of Flight (with 1763 Users / Members)
- FS2004 - A Century of Flight (The Original) (with 747 Users / Members)

Where I am currently an admin of.

Up to know EVERY relaunch of sites are results of a lot of regressions. This site included.

Rebuilding the site was undoubtedly a major undertaking and a significant achievement. I have great respect for everyone who worked on it and invested so much time and effort. My criticism concerns the search function. As it stands, it is impossible - for me, at least- to select WWI ships for CFS2. Search terms like "WWI" or "World War I" yield unsufficiant or even incorrect results. It isn't easier while searching for specific items in other FS versions. Somehow, this was easier to manage in the old version. That said, I admit that search functions on other sites are even less satisfactory.

These are the easiest ones, as they have their own category. Others could only be found while searching with war years.

Why now,.....does it take me some many different links to click before I find the right one to enter SOH? Or would it be a problem at my end? It was never like that before.

Check that your links/bookmarks are actually pointing to the current '.org' site and not the old and defunct '.com' site. The old '.com' site domain name was picked up by scammers and data harvesters so you should be very wary if any of your old links/bookmarks still point to that site.

Thanks for the info Tako_Kichi

FYI, You can type a cent sign in most programs on Microsoft Windows using the Alt code for the cents sign, meaning a numeric code that you type while holding down the Alt key on your keyboard.

The alt code for this symbol is 0162, so you hold down the Alt key and type 0162 to enter a cent sign.
¢ ;)
Priller is European. Europeans deal with funny money. They have 'cents', but they write it with the € sign. You know something like the metric system. Something I wish IO had learned decades ago.

just a thought...possibly the long wait is perhaps as a result of archiving the decades-spanning file library, one file at a time; and flightsim site will perhaps reopen when the archived file library is ready to be publicly accessible? - I could be entirely in the wrong, but my 2-cents on the matter

Usually you can just migrate the entire Library at once… not just one file at a time… so that s done in a few hours usually… and to be honest, migrating a website onto a new domain doesn’t take months… they could’ve reopened allready months ago… I’ve done Website and Domain Migrations myself a ton… it usually takes only hours to do… so if they would’ve wanted to do so, it could’ve been online allready after 24 - 48 hours with ease nowadays…

So i guess the entire thing is a Dead duck… won’t come up ever again… the announcement on the dead site is nothing but a place holder…

well I believe at least to my knowledge with regards to SOH, there was an entire team to migrate the SOH library from the old to the new, and said migration was done one at a time? - i.e. each file was individually downloaded from the old and then re-uploaded to the new, if I am not mistaken??

with respect to flightsim library, last I recall per the publicly made posts, there was a lone volunteer enthusiast who had taken the arduous task upon themselves to migrate the entire flightsim library for archival purposes to a new location; the new owners to my knowledge were offloading their responsibility of hosting the file library vis-a-vis off-site hosting and management by said enthusiast/volunteer and then there is the question of who is paying for hosting the archived library - server/bandwidth costs?? i.e. presumably the new owners are working on a plan akin to the prior flightsim annual memberships...dunno...merely thinking out loud

anyhow, perhaps you maybe correct afterall; the expectation I believe was that they ought to have atleast posted updates on any potential progress; given that there is not a peep, it appears the site may have well have gone the way of the dodo...pity if that is the case! a palpable loss!

You're not mistaking at all. It was a huge undertaking. Thanks again to the team of volunteers who did that!

IIRC it had to be migrated one file at a time by a large team of volunteers (I personally transferred several hundred files, multiple whole sections of FSX and P3D actually) as the old library and the new library were totally incompatible with regard to storage systems and data trees. It took weeks to complete.
