From post WW2 Rabaul PNG. I know what it is but not what it would be used for (at this stage). In the backgound is a Japanese machine gun pill box.

Is that disc object WWII era? Something about it looks really familiar.(Most likely a history channel documentary...) Do you have any more info on the picture that may help jog one's memory?

I have seen pictures from the WWII era of large concrete disks used as listening devices along the british coast. Some were literally used to detect engine sounds from an incoming raid before they were audible to the human ear. It's possible that this is one of them.

No.. It's an emery stone. Just what it's function was I do not know....It was left there as a war reminder.

I don't think it is a listening device, it is too small and in the wrong place. Might be wrong though

The British listening devices varied, some like the one Stitz posted, but most were long, curved concrete walls.

I think it's money. Big money! Not your chump change small grinding stone money either. This is a serious peice of hard currency me thinks. Like the Rai stones on Yap. Or...the stone grinding wheel from Marquis de Rays' doomed New Ireland settlement at Rabaul.

Man.. Now you do have my curiosity going on this thing..

I was thinking its a rice grinder. But its beginning to look symbollic. Perhaps 'Buddah' related?

it actually looks more likes its had a bit of wood put through a hole then tide down to stop it falling off ... i was thinking maybe its just a place name type thing? we got a couple round stones around here that have the name of the village on em

It's a whet stone for sharpening all those "samurai" swords carried by Japanese soldiers during the war.

Ok ok.... I thought someone else was going to put this in, but I guess I'll have to reveal what it is....

Its a Stargate wormhole innitialization field containment module. There were several found around the regions of Japan, and were later capped in concrete to keep the tiny Goa-uld from coming through and climbing in their ears...

:d

For those that are interested, I think you have the right object PP in that photo of Marquis de Rays. A mate of mine that was born in Kavieng sent me some info about it. Some links below.
========================================
Its a Milling Stone (flour). The story is that it was first taken to Kavieng (where I was born) by a guy called Marquis de Rays.
I was told by a friend in Kavieng who was related to famous local German "Queen Emma Forsayth", she ran Rabaul
and her home was up on the hill just near the drom, ...that she took it over to Rabaul, for some dumb reason.

There was also another story in Kavieng that this was one of two wheels dropped off by either;

William Dampier or Abel Tasman
I can not remember who/who did the trick or if this was a true story....
=========================================
The wheel is very large. It looks that way but its the same wheel.

That wheel was set up near Admiral Yamamoto HQ, just over the road from the Cosmopolitan Hotel (The Cosmo),

Anoughter later view of the bunker complex:
In your fathers image that's one of the bunker heads in the background, the hotel was just next to this.

This is another view of the complex;
