Over 130 million credit card data stolen

Federal indictments were filed Monday against three men in relation to the theft of data from 130 million credit and debit cards from Heartland Payment Systems, 7-Eleven, and Hannaford Brothers Co., a Maine-based supermarket chain.

According to prosecutors, this is the largest credit and debit card theft ever charged.
Albert Gonzalez of Miami, AKA "segvec," "soupnazi" and "j4guar17," plus two unnamed co-conspirators were charged with "...conspiracy and conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and accused of using a sophisticated hacking technique, which tries to find a way around a computer network's firewall to steal credit- and debit-card information." The technique in question was a SQL injection attack.
Gonzalez was also implicated in the TJX ID theft case and is awaiting trial both on that and in the hacking of a network belonging to an unnamed national restaurant chain.
If convicted, Gonzalez faces up to 20 years in prison on the wire fraud conspiracy charge and an additional five years in prison on the conspiracy charge, as well as a fine of $250,000 for each charge. The case is also being investigated by the U.S. Secret Service.
In January, credit-card processing company Heartland Payment Systems was hit by a massive credit-card hack that allegedly captured about 100 million credit-card numbers. The company installed an encryption system about two weeks later to ensure that such a hack did not happen again.
"Heartland Payment Systems would like to congratulate Department of Justice and Treasury officials on their effort to bring to justice some of the individuals behind numerous data breaches in recent years," Heartland said in a statement. "The commitment and persistence shown by law enforcement and other stakeholders in this matter has been exemplary.
Heartland looks forward to lending whatever support we can to this investigation as well as the broader fight against global cyber criminals," the company added.

I once read about some of these dirtbags sitting outside in the parking lots of major departments stores like Sears, Macy's etc and collecting credit account charges as purchases were being made. They simply hacked into the system and I assume they simply signed in to the network.

I really believe this is planned to topple economies and worldwide as this credit card stealing is going on worldwide. Why do these chain stores wait until after a breach occurs? I guess it's not effecting their bottom line as the stolen money affects consumers and not the business itself. I guess if you see someone doing this notify the police as to what you believe they are doing. Just my two cents and all INMO of course.

Oh my goodness.... I once read a post here too about using the public unsecured wifi, that these creeps gather your banking and credit card data. That's scary.

Noticed that at the banks or shops (car rentals, doctor's offices, etc.), they chain their pens so it wont run away! And their data system is available to all the creeps around town!!!

maybe tyler durden had the idea after all?

I remember when that hit earlier in the year because the Hannifords grocery chain is where I do about 90% of my food shopping.

Luckily, my card wasn't hit because it's debit only and it never seems to have any money....

Because I never have any money.
