Clawson's SB2U joint conversion update

Hold everything!!! Paul Clawson has done as I anticipated & given permission to tweak & overhaul his planes. Only stipulation is that a copy of his original Read me is included with any uploads.

Could you also ask Paul Clawson to make a FS 2004 version of all the new palnes he made for FSX, such as the Berliner Joyce OJ-2, Northrop BT-1, Northrop A-17, Douglas O-43, Douglas O-46, Amiot 143 or Ryan YO-51 Dragonfly (very nice small bird...)?

Awesome!
Thank you, Paul!

Allen:
Could the flaperon animation be added to the SB2U mdl? I'd love to be able to reverse the prop pitch as well, but now I am asking waaay too much!

YEAH!

Got some work done on it. Decided to re-texture the whole thing from scrach. Both the model and texture are in ruff shape still. I don't think I can do the flaperon and prop reverse is done bar flight dynamics (.air)

Hey Allen, she looks nicer with the Midway Marines skin already!

Wow, prop blades, engine, folded wing inner structure and arrestor hook are textured finally! :jump::applause: :jump: :applause: :jump: You were lightning-fast, great job!

I am attaching the blurred disc textures, so that you can include them in the aircraft already. I'll try to work on the airfile for the flaperons and propeller reverse, what I meant for the flaperons was the visual animation. I am sure you have in your collection Akemi Mizoguchi's D3A1 Val, which had flaperons.

When Akemi's Val flaps are actuated, it's delightful to see the ailerons dropping down with them, as it was in real life. But don't go crazy over it, I was asking for this eye-candy only if it's not a nightmare to do. I think increasing flap lift, and activating the thrust reverse option in the airfile, will be enough to simulate those SB2U very advanced features for the time it was designed.

Cheers!

I change the prop and prop disk to use the stock CFS2 prop style. The old mostly cut out. Only the part that pokes out was kept the rest is just CFS2 style texture. Don't have Akemi Mizoguchi's D3A1 Val.

Do the ailerons dropping down using the the normal piviot or use a droping system like below?

Ouch! You caught me with me pants down.......I don't know!

Akemi's Val only shows the ailerons dropping down together with the flaps. They also still maintain their regular flap motion, yet more restrained, when the stick is moved to either side to control bank.

You should get Akemi's Val, it's a beautiful aircraft and there are tons of repaints done for it here at SOH!

As to the propeller, may I suggest to use, if possible, the propeller model used by TheB24 Guy in his stock US overhauls? It's very nice to work on it, it looks great on the planes and it features separate front/back blade textures so that details, like prop maunfacturer brand emblems, can be added to the front only as in real life. I think it was developed by Dbolt.

I am suggesting this because the stock prop blades are very rough-looking. Besides, I noticed a few incongruences in Aerocrate's Ann stock CFS2 prop disc: the back disc diameter is smaller than the front, it's very evident in VC mode where the outer shape looks polygonal instead of round as it should be.

Cheers!

Look at any pics I see nothing that looks like a droping system for the SB2U.

I can get The B24 Guy props but you should PM about using the first or I can map the still blades to another .bmp like The B24 Guys still prop uses. The back disc and front disk for the Ki-30 are the same. It is dual sided.

OK, I just sent a PM to The B24 Guy asking him permission to use his stock overahul props on the SB2U.

A slow day for the SB2U. I use the stock TBD-1 Devs DP as a base and reboxed it to fix the SB2U. It is and aircraft of similar shape, side and construction over all and had wing tanks. I set it up as -3 with 4 50 cals in the wings. Bombs are what the old DP had but I fit the bombs better to the model.

Hi Allen,

The B24 Guy wrote me back that it's perferctly ok with him to fit his overhaul US props to the SB2U. He even volunteers to place the prop on the model himself.

Why don't you get in touch with him?

As to the armament, please make a version with just one wing gun, because all of VMSB-241 SB2U-3's at Midway were equipped with just one .50" mg on the right wing, while the rear gunner had a .30" mg. All of the historical info links posted here by Fibber indicate that.

The flight model beta files I attached above for Bearcat include the dp, since you are at it use the hardpoints I figured out for Dbolt's US weapons instead of using the ugly stock bombs.

Cheers!

Same basic plane by Paul Clawson, just some different paint and mods. The 476K file is Paul's original SB2U-1 in pre-war colors. For right now if you want a SB2U in a Battle of Midway paint job then download my SB2U-3 repaint/mod (734K) of Paul's original aircraft. The two-plane package (1.9Mb) is a rework of Paul's plane done by the Virtual Navy crew that added several features such as folding wings, flaps, a better canopy, and a basic VC. The screenshots above show the VN pre-war plane with my repaint applied by Keltic. The blue/gray camo version in the package uses different texture mapping from the pre-war version and my paint doesn't cover the cockpit area. And finally there's W. Wright's VB-3 repaint of Paul's plane (513K). Here's a screenshot of my paint on Paul's original plane, not the VN version.

I like more this Paul's original plane with the painted engine than the version of VN with a draught engine and more in the background. In my see It is more like stock MS models.

Yeah!

Nice VC Allen!

Unfortunately, The B24 Guy wrote me it's quite impossible making a 2-blade propeller out of the 3-blade props he used on his stock overhauls.

Please, let me ask you: why is it necessary to replace the prop provided by VN, since it looks real fine, textured with correct colours, in the pictures you posted above?

Is it because of the blurred disc hiding the pilots and some aircraft details? If so, aren't the two parts (still prop and blurred disc) independent from each other?

Cheers!

You know this little separate front/back blade textures for the props had take over 2 and half hours to do.

CFS2 and gMax use 3 props. Still (just the blades) slow disc (half disk) and blurred disc (full disk)

I change the prop disk alpha to the one used by the OHs that I think Dbolt made. The blurred disc looks better with it.

Looks good Allen :jump:

I just PMed KH to let him know that I could split the props into front and back, but mapping them to a texture with SCASM is very hard.
Glad you were able to do it.

If you need help re-anamating any parts I would be glad to help.

Regards,
B24Guy

The thing is that the slow disc and blurred disc that I have for a 2 blade props are fom the FS2004 Jenny that came with the FS2004 game pack. Getting them remaped to work with the CFS2 based texture has been a pain.

I used them for the Sopwith 1½ Strutter but it didn't use a front/back setup on the prop disks. Gettting the back to be remap right wasn't fun.

I re did the anamation in gMax it was not that bad for this plane.

The whole SOH community will be grateful to you for your efforts!!

Please, do forgive me, but now I have another pain in store.

Yesterday I realised there's another glitch in VN's "Midway" model: there are two carb air scoops modelled on the cowl and overlapping each other. I don't know why I haven't noticed it before, but it must be fixed. As it is now it looks really ridicolous and hideous.

Is that lovely kitty yours? I had a Siamese female cat a few years ago, of the old breed still with the round face. She was the most affectionate, beautiful and intelligent cat I ever met before. I still miss her.

Cheers!

I replaced the top scoop. The old one was not shaped right anyway. No the cat is not mine. Google grumpy cat.
