Maps

Is there anyplace in P3 where there are more detailed maps and I'm missing them? In P2, when we went to CFS3 and had the briefing flyout on the left, we could view a slightly more detailed map which allowed us to divine (notice I didn't say pinpoint) the location of our objective on a paper map. Now without the CFS3 interface, there's no more detailed map to refer to. I've been able so far, using the max zoom, to plot the objective on a paper map, but it's very difficult. Does anyone on the team have a tip or suggestion for us purists? Otherwise, so far, what I've seen is spectacular. I'm very impressed with what you guys have delivered.

Addendum: Using the M key to bring up the map in game, doesn't give us anything better.

Hi, CPIRRMANN
This isn't what you mean, I know, but for everyone who'd like to get maps:
I chose GOOGLE MAPS, were you can zoom in and out, and have a choice between road map, satelite picture, and terrain map.
Here's a terrain map showing the area Arras - Douai - Cambrai. By zooming in, you could always get the right bit - I have already drawn some of the airfields in mine.
You can make a screenshot (press "print") and go to Photoshop, click "new" and "Insert". Then you can cut it right, and print it out. Not the easiest way, but fun.

It would seem to depend on what makes 'your boat float'. As a wholesale cheater, and a 'non-map-depender-on' ( M ) is a drastic improvement. :ernae:

And this is useful for knowing who you're likely to be facing, as well as allowing you to follow Olham54's advice and print out the appropriate Google Map for annotation: http://patriot.net/~townsend/WW1AirMap2/

Malheureusement, il n'offre aucune aide à nos aviateurs français ou américains... c'est la guerre. :frown:

Hi, DEJ
this is a map I've wanted - were I can locate all Squadrons and Jastas in the specific time, and how they moved around. Thank you very much for this great link!

Olham,

Happy to help. There are some 'unknowns' and 'unsures' in those locations though, as you'll notice.

In fact, I hadn't come across the link you posted, so thanks to you too. Those maps could maybe resolve some of those unknowns.

For example, Montigny Ferme, where Jasta 11 were from middle to end August 1918, I believe is somewhere around Fontaine Notre Dame, about 5 miles west of Cambrai... maybe one of those maps will show it.

No, no ,no. You all have the cart before the horse. I'm talking about no detail map in the game with which to reference a paper map.

I had scanned/computer restored some WWI maps last year that were available in full res for printing. I think they were up on the OFF site for dl, or maybe on Polivisky's site.. can't seem to find them now, maybe Pol or some one can give a link for them?

I had realised that, but was just adding to the general info :)

Didn't Pol' or one of the guys mention maps in one of the interviews or am I getting confused?! Something about CFS3 using one map of the whole theatre in BMP form that it then zooms into when you press the M key, so detail is problematic but they were looking into that.

As for any other maps in game.......still waiting on the postman so can't comment!

Hi Guys,

Hes not talking about extra maps, or about the maps accessed by the M key.

he is talking about when you first go to your mission in the breifing part there was a section where you could check your waypoints, it was on the left of the main mission menu screen along with overview, assignments and arrmament. in the waypoints tab you could navigate around the map zoom in and out and check your waypoint locations. scroll through the waypoints etc

from here you could then mark the various points onto your printed maps etc.

but that function has been removed as the manager now takes you straight to the mission, bypassing the CFS3 portion of the mission selection criteria.

however if you start your mission and then hit pause, bring up the Map with the M key you can use the + and - keys and the arrows to zoom in and out and navigate around the map as you would from the waypoint tab in the mission menu screen. then when your happy you know were your going unpause the game and your off. the only thing you wont be able to do is scroll through the waypoints in order. but then again you can pretty easily work out teh order of the waypoints by looking at the map and the line of flight.

hope this helps,

regards Rob.

Thanks Capt. (shouldn't it be major by now?) Anyway, that's what I thought. The detail is less than the waypoint map, so it's more difficult to plot the points but it is doable. Maybe that's more immersion and fog of war? We'll carry on.

ahh that map!! It all becomes clear now, of course I'd forgotten about that page, doh!

So any potential to improve the inflight map would be very handy in the future if at all possible.

If you really really miss it you can also turn off the new feature to go "direct to mission" (workshop of course), in which case you get ye olde the GUI loading first however we recommend you don't.

Before I try it, I'm compelled to ask, Pol, why wouldn't you recommend it? Sounds like Bugs Bunny telling Yosemite Sam in the gun powder room he can light a match, but he wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks guys, great links!

BELIEVE IT or NOT, that each Mission that I put together is researched, where I try to base it on some factual issue. The Dover Strait Mission is based on factual accounting of 12 German Torpedo boats facing off against two British Naval warships. If you managed to sink the second torpedo boat, then you satisfied the historical perspective of the mission. The aircraft support is an add-on, but that particular mission was fun to build, and dammed hard to survive the flak, ( but possible, after 6 or so times I flew it!)

Cheers,

Montigny Ferme / Jasta 11 found

Hi, DEJ
Thanks to research guru SHREDWARD, I found a map at McMasters, that really shows the airfield on the bottom, south of Hervilly (were you see another airfield).
Montigny Ferme is located by a railway line; it's halfway between Péronne and St.Quentin. Here's the map adress:

http://lt1.mcmaster.ca/ww1/wrz4mp.php?grid=62c&map_id=83&view

That was a nice search; it was so close, as if it all happened only some short time ago. Strange feeling...

Enjoy! Olham

PS: added a Google map
