A Race Event: Airfields of the Southwest Pacific II.

A "quick-n-dirty" race event. Fly WW-II aircraft of the Pacific War to 16 airports in the Southwest Pacific area. No GPS or VOR navigation allowed. The good news is that ADF stations can be used. The bad news is that many of the airports along the route do not have ADF stations. This means that maps, stopwatches, and eyeballs out the window will be useful. You may fly aircraft that were 1) in production by July 1944, and 2) were Pacific War theater aircraft.

You will be "placed" into one of four speed classes, based on the maximum speed possible for the plane you choose, as determined by having tested the plane in the sim at it's critical altitude, under no-weather conditions. The aircraft associated with each class are listed in appendix 1 of the rules. If you wish to fly a plane that fits the production and theater requirements, but is not listed in appendix 1, fear not. Simply submit a flight test report with your registration post, as prescribed in the rules. A winner will be declared for each speed class.

To register for the event, make a post in this thread, identifying the sim, the aircraft you will fly, and the vendor. For example, "I will be flying the Flight Replicas P-40N, in FSX!" If the aircraft type is not listed in appendix 1 of the rules, also include your flight test report, so we may place the aircraft in the appropriate speed class. No sand bagging your flight test! Miss Nellie can tell, and she will deal will you harshly...

The event starts 00:00 GMT, 15 August, 2015 and will run for 30 days, during which time you may make as many runs as you wish.

The rules PDF is attached to this post.

I guess I can kick it off..

I'll be flying Milton's PV-2 Harpoon in FSX SE. If time permits, I'll intend to do a second run in the AH Seafire III also in FSX SE.

And just because we like pictures...

Poon! Nice ride, Willy. Don't know what I will fly yet. I got an offer on a nice used Ki-43 today. Not too many miles on it, and it has an extended warranty from the factory.

Well, I've been lurking on many flight sim forums for years. Time to get out in the community and meet the people. I'm going to enter the race flying the Flight Replica CAC Boomerang. I have no idea how to get my flight test data, but with its top speed of 305 mph (265 knots), it would be in Class 2.

If I can't learn to control the Boomerang, I'll switch the the venerable Catalina. Looking forward to the fun.

Welcome Douglas! The choice of the Boomerang is worth a couple of style points, if you ask me..!

I was just checking this plane, and I have a question for the manufacturer. The aircraft.cfg file says it has a critical altitude of 16500 FT, which would suggest a supercharger. And in fact some models of the Boomerang did have them. However, this Flight Replicas model also has "supercharger=0" in the aircraft.cfg. This results in a plane that behaves in FSX as though it has no supercharger, and the result of that is a slow plane at altitude. This might be a typo in the aircraft.cfg. Will check...

Everything I have read about the Boomerang suggests it was not supercharged. According to Wikipedia, it was lively at low altitude but its performance fell off rapidly above 15,000 feet. Wikipedia shows only one prototype as having a supercharger, and it did not enter production.

Looks like I'll be keeping it about 12,000 feet. :encouragement:

Rgr that Douglas. I just read the same. However, the Flight Replicas Boomerang is modeled with a manually operated two stage blower (high and low). Even so, I could not get much over 260 KTAS with it. That speed does seem about right, and is thus a "class 2" ship. I might fly this one as well. It's such a beautiful FS model.

I'll be flying the VS SBD in FSX. Busy getting some gauges installed. Wind drift gauge. Already has a simple AP, but I installed a Sperry that I stole, I mean borrowed from an Army C47. Radio compass also from that C47. I don't think they will mind, maybe.

Sounds like fun & I will throw my hat in the ring.

I will be in one of the fast movers, MV P-38 or the A2A P-47. I will decide which after I make a few bounces in each.

I'll be flying Tim Conrad's Mitsubishi J2M Raiden in FSX with FSGlobal Weather.

Or possibly this one. . .

I have the gauges installed, getting familiar with the SBD. There is a bit of engine damage modeled, have to be a little careful with the throttle. Also, going to be using FSX default real weather.

Ok. . . .this is my final answer. Hello Tigercat!

Goodbye Raiden! I'll be flying this one first, then come back and fly the Harpoon on the second go-around.

Nice nose art Ed!

Well, got out the BFH, a couple of spanners, some screwdrivers & a pri-bar. Then went to work on my Spartan Executive from the Mac Robertson, it's full of holes now! :concern: Then.... Got out the "duck" tape, zip ties & 4 rolls of electrical tape & installed the system into the WOP I P-51D as a popup. Haven't touched the master contactor yet, waiting for a so-called professional avionics tech to check the work - fingers crossed, don't want to let the smoke out, cuz that's what makes it all work! :biggrin-new:

Will be flying "PAUL I" in class IV using FSX & FSRealWX Pro and.... If everything goes well and time remains will do the job ALL OVER AGAIN and transfer the equipment (If I didn't let the smoke out) into a MAAM SIM B-25 named "Miss Mitchell" then try it out in class II. After this will end up with a bunch of aeroplanes, full of holes in the cockpit!

I am entering a WoP (A2A) Boeing B-29A flown in FS9 with default real weather. Yes, a questionable effort trying to get a large bomber in and out of those short dirt and coral runways. And those palm trees...

Did I mention the part about the Wright R-3350's catching on fire a lot? Hmm.
