Aircraft parts missing when panning about in external view in VR

centuryseries

SOH-CM-2023
As the title suggests - I'm having issues with parts of the aircraft - any aircraft - missing when panning about in external view within VR - I've raised it on the MSFS forum, but no response.

Has anyone here had this?

Its a real immersion/enjoyment killer to see your fuselage vanish, followed by your ailerons, wings, jet pipes, gear, tires etc when panning....

I use a Quest 2 through Virtual Desktop, Nvidia RTX3080, 48Gb RAM, Itel i9 10900k if that helps.

Question: are you running the game with everything maxed out? If so, you might want to tone down the settings somewhat and try again.

Clearing the caches also helps.

Cheers,

Priller

No, about mid level settings. Sim is running pretty smoothly, photogrametry a bit slow but otherwise running well.

Where do you clear the cache?

I have had that issue, too. I even posted an image showing two aircraft on top of each other. I "so far" haven't seen that problem since the latest update.

Try playing around with your zoom settings. You can adjust zoom via keyboard and mouse but there's also a setting in the camera menu. (you might have that set on focus ?...) The thickness of a polygon, the stuff that your model is made of, is not even measurable, also it's 'one side only'. If the camera is zoomed in too much it will go right thru the visable side of poly's and it will look like the object, no matter what object, has disappeared...

Because you say 'vanish' and not 'missing' and also 'panning' just on a hunge such a zoom issue springs to mind first.

I'd check that zoom setting in the camera menu first.

Thanks Javis - by vanish I mean missing. Its not like a bleed through, its quite literally parts missing and then coming back as you pan like ailerons, interior parts, tail fins, wings landing gear - one by one they disappear then pop back as I rotate the VR exterior view of the aircraft. All zooms are default - not even sure if you can zoom out in VR mode. Certainly this oddness wasn't present in MSFS 2020. I even tried a repair and removed all addons, I only had the Justflight Vulcan (current version).

You see parts disappear, right ? So the're actually there. If that's true I'd say they vanish rather than that they are missing. If a part (or object) is missing it's just not there and will never show up just like that. If a part vanishes while you pan your camera it is simply too close to the camera probably caused by the zoom setting, i.e. you are looking through the part, usually there's nothing to see inside a part.. zoom back and the part (or object), i.e. the outward polygons of the object, become visable again.

Can you verify that you can still see 'parts' of the object, like f.i. an aileron or horizontal stab., it looks like the object is sort of 'being eaten away' ?..

If you can put up a screenshot, that would help a lot. By your comment only i'm just guessing what could be happening.

Oh, btw, what about in normal external view (not VR), do you see the same thing ?

Normal 2d external view is fine.

No nothing eaten away, it’s not always the closest parts to the camera. Imagine panning around and the entire aileron has gone. The rest of the wing is there. Pan a bit more the tail fin in its entirety vanishes and is missing, pan a bit more it reappears. I’ll try to get a screenshot.

The camera cannot be zoomed in VR, and it’s the model mesh that disappears part by part. Whole parts at a time, like the wheels just vanish the reappear as you pan around.

Ouch! That's pretty nasty, yes. I would've thought you'd be zoomed in much more...

I don't have my HP Reverb G2 installed atm. I find MSFS2024 still problematic enough without VR... So i can't replicate what you are seeing atm. Not so sure anymore that it's a zoom problem of any kind like my initial thought. Might be more severe. Still, the nose section in pic 2 and 3 is clearly visable so it's not 'missing'. Same for the starboard wing.

I think it might be a good idea to ask MSFS2024 VR users if they possibly see the same thing ?

What VR set are you using ?

Of course i have no clue with 2024 but i never had a problem with zoom in 2020 VR. Worked fine both internal and external. You say that you can't get the camera to zoom in/out in 2024 VR. Don't you think that might have to do with your objects vanishing problem ? Did you indeed verify that zoom does not work in MSFS2024 ? I have not read anything about that sofar...

A simple inquiry returned this :

Yes, external view zoom still works in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. You can use the plus and minus keys on your keyboard to zoom in and out of the external view. However, some users have reported issues with the free look and zoom, including difficulty switching between camera modes and issues with keybindings.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Zoom Functionality:
The "+" and "-" keys are typically used to zoom in and out of the external view, allowing you to adjust the camera distance from the aircraft.

  • Troubleshooting Zoom Issues:
If you're experiencing difficulties with zoom, try these solutions:
    • Verify Keybindings: Ensure that your zoom keybindings are correctly assigned in the simulator's settings.

    • Check Third-Party Controls: If you are using third-party control software, ensure it is not interfering with the zoom functionality.

    • Default Bindings: You can try resetting your keybindings to default to see if that resolves the issue.
    • -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get your zoom working in MSFS2024 and you might well have solved the problem... ;)

Good luck!

Hi Javis,

Your simple inquiry is wrong. You can't believe everything that Google AI generates (y)

VR Zoom has never been a feature since MSFS 2020 came out.

In my opinion this is nothing to do with zoom. I did wonder if it's something to do with LODs. This only happens in VR. 2D is perfectly fine and you can zoom in and out to your hearts content without issue. But since I play in VR 100% of the time, this really is a game killer.

This really is a head scratcher....

It's becoming a bit frustrating now even for a person that's just trying to help... :dejection:

I do wish i could see it myself. I've read now that zoom doesn't even work in 2D MSFS2024 ?! Have to say i kinda forgat about VR only in my last post, sorry. It's also been a while for me to experience VR in FS2020, atleast more than a year. I DO vividly remember when for the first time i got my G2 finally working i almost cried when i flew the Tiggie for the first time !....

I had *some* idea about what it would be like but i could've never imagined it felt THIS real ! I was totally flabbergasted ! What i can't remember is if there were any problems with zooming in/out in external view, i take it for granted it was fine because otherwise i would've extremely hated it but at the same it could've been easely compensated by the extreme wonderful feeling of just sitting in the VR cockpit and being able to touch the gauges and stick (which i actually tried..... you never know....hehe..)

Remarkable only John has reported to have the same problem here... I still find it remarkable too that i know by experience about parts partly vanishing caused by too much zoomed in during panning (i used to be an FS aircraft modeller for about 30 years.. ;-) and that zoom proves to be a big issue in MSFS2024 (and maybe even in 2020 as well ?.....)

It certainly is true that my experience with vanishing parts didn't look anything like the screenshots you posted so, yeah, possibly something completely different. I am really lost for words now, CS, sorry i couldn't be of any help to you with this extraordinairy mysterious problem.

I certainly hope it will be solved anyway sooner or later !

Cheers,
Jan

Thanks for trying! I used to model for FS too, not as many years as you but about 22 years. Stopped when my P3D project was released. Used to model for Alphasim/Virtavia and then myself at Glowingheat.

Ok, great to know ! :encouragement: (feel a bit silly now explaining poly's to you... ;-)

I started with "Aircraft & Scenery Designer" for FS 4.0 back in 1989. IIRC 500 poly limit, not for the faint of heart... hehe.. Mostly freeware and later VIP, later followed by Maam-Sim and own projects like freeware F-86 and VVC (Vintage Virtual Cockpit) for Manfred Jahn's excellent C-47. When FS2020 came about i wanted to fly it, not work 24/7... :teapot:

Love your B-58 ! When can we fly it FS2024 ? ( just kidding, beautiful work,David ! (y))
