Airplane Modelling on the 'cheap'!

So like every other red-blooded American, I like building a model here and there... I know we have a few Outhousers that are pretty big fanatics themselves... (Cazzie's the big one I think right?)

Well, I've been slowly experimenting with non-model-specific paints... Rather than paying $4 for a tiny jar of Model Master at the hobby store, I decided to try out non-conventional paints... Craft paints for example... nice size jar for $.67!!! and acrylic.....

They obviously have ups and downs.... nice to mix whatever color you need and a wider spektrum of color... unfortunately you do not have those specific military colors, like OD... they do have an Olive Green, but it's just not right...

I also started using spray paint that you'd pick up at a hardware store... it is really good for the basics... black, white, & gray...tried experimenting with silver, but haven't found one to give good results yet...

Thought I'd share some pics.... These were all built by yours truly, a true amateur of the hobby, with the only model specific paints being MM Insignia Yellow, and Testors Silver......

Witt, I've been using a shiny silver paint from the hardware store for aircraft with bare aluminum finishes like 30 to 40s propliners.

Witt,
I use mostly 'Duplicolour' automotive aerosols for 90% of my models.
OK, 90% of my models are cars and not many are styrene kit based but..................I found that using the 'Duplicolour Etch Primer' as a base coat means that the Automotive paint doesn't attack the styrene.
If you look at a range like 'Duplicolour' you will discover some very useful 'Aluminium' tones.
If I'm really after a concours finish I use an airbrush or a mini spraygun, again with auto laquer.

Way back when, I used acrylic craft paints thined down with rubbing alcohol in small air sparyer. The rubbing alcohol allowed the thick paint to be spary in the airsprayer and made it dry vary fast.

also a trick for using silver paint is to use a flat white base coat over the primer, then the silver......so..primer,flat white,silver...Mr candy apple red Joe Balion told me that one day when he came to my brother inlaws folks house ( they lived across the street, and mikes mother and balion lived next door to eachother when kids, lifelong friends),,,but mike ( my brother in alw and i were painting models together and joe came and helped,,i had no clue who the man was in those days....and mike and i were still kids,,but he (joe) saw us and came and gave us a "class" on painting models....LOL.....i still siphoned
