AMD Overclocks FX-8150 to 8.4GHz and Bulldozes into Guinness Book

Yep the new Bulldozer APU yes I said APU as that is what AMD is calling their CPUs nowadays is going on sale the FX 8150 at less than $300 is about to be on the shelves!

Here is the story of the world record breaking overclock...don't try this at home kids!

Chinese website HKEPC claims Taiwan motherboard makers gave it the skinny on a handful of upcoming Bulldozer chips, including:
  • FX-8100: 2.8GHz (3.7GHz Turbo), 95W
  • FX-8120: 3.1GHz (4GHz Turbo), 95W
  • FX-8150: 3.6GHz (4.2GHz Turbo), 125W
  • FX-8170: 3.9GHz (4.5GHz Turbo), 125W
All four processors are built on a 32nm SOI manufacturing process and boast 8 cores, 8MB of shared L3 cache, and DDR3-1866 support.

Heck this one ought to be able to run the new Microsoft Flight right off the shelf...OK that was mean! :O)

Yeah, competition is a very good thing. For years, AMD had the upper hand with performance and price, but the Intel Core2-series and now the i-series of CPU's has eclipsed AMD. I'm very pleased to see AMD charging back with an Intel stomper.

Yep...I spent a fortune in the mid 2000's going through the entire Intel P4 range (including the extreme editions),then switched to the AMD FX* series...though to the 4800+,then back to Intel's C2D/QX range with my most recent acquisition being an i7 2600k. Looks like I may be going AMD on my next build.:kilroy::icon_lol:

*Just don't mention the time I accidentally knocked over a tray of ten €1000+ea AMD FX60 processors.... bending their pins and leaving them as worthless paper weights!

I know what I'm buying for my current FSX AMD Machine. A massive AMD Bulldozer APU upgrade.

by Well TechCorp just finished testing the MSI X79 SandyBridge-E motherboard with the new SandyBridge SIX core i7 3820(2MB of L3 Cache), i7-3930(12Mb of L3 cache) and the i7-3980X (15MB of L3 cache). The L3 caching is divided up the number of cores. The test results were way better than anticipated. I cannot mention the specs because we report to mfgs only but I can tell that Bulldozer is once again the underdog...well not so fast...when you consider price/performance there is nothing wrong with an AMD buying decision for us bargain basement shoppers. However, if you can afford to spend the moola the i7-3830 and 3980X are just what the doctor ordered for balls to wall fast!!! Believe it or not you guys that have the 980X, 990X, and 995 Extreme CPUs are going to receive an instruction set upgrade that will still knock the socks off of any competitor out there, at least for a while. All of the awesomeness of the of X79 includes all of the goodies of the Z68 series mainboards plus a ton of OCing extras at some very very nice temps and PRICE! It's all coming up roses. The new i7-3900 series CPUs are not planned to be backward compatible to the 1155 motherboards but that is not written in stone yet. Get ready to RUMBLE!!!

Seeing as how I'm the epitome of poor right now but desperately in need of more power for fun...make mine Bulldozer.

Well I spent 3 days at TechCorp working with the new FX Series APUs called Bulldozer and I gotta tell ya the i7-2600k which isn't much more expensive runs circles around the new AMD 8150 which is the fastest of new AMD "APU FX" series processors. It doesn't even compare in tests with the new i7 3930 and 3980. I really thought you could streamline the 8 cores in the AMD to work their magic beyond Intel's capability. Also a good six core 980X and higher will eat it's lunch. What was AMD thinking when they over hyped this processor? AMD blames the operating systems currently available but if they new that was the defacto standard they had to work with to produce the results they hyped it is a little late to blame the Windows OS...clock speed and cores alone will not carry the new APU.

I'm very disappointed but I will say this that for $279.00 it is a good budget workhorse that is capable of high OCing (4.8GHz) and high resolution reasonably fast gaming(however a 4.0GHz Intel 2700k runs circles around it and a 980X thrashes it). As for FSX not so nice...especially if you use a lot of addon scenery and effects. I guess we can blame Microsoft for that too...however FSX with all the goodies added runs just fine on the new quads and six cores that Intel puts out...so who do we blame now...oh I know...us for believing the hype! :O(

I have the 980X. Do the owners have to do something to get this upgrade? This is awfully good news.
