An old project brought up to date: Canso PBY-5 of SAGQ

@Twice43,
The "gentle wing swallow" could be modified by tuning a little the roll movement, I presume; I note for the next release.

Observed it again in another flight with the floats retracted. This is all while the aircraft is using the Autopilot on NAV or HDG. (AP works very well). Close look at the ailerons shows they are moving slowly up & down as they correct for starting to roll one way, then the correction brings the aircraft rolling gently back the other way, but beyond wings level, so there is a slow cycle of roll/correction going on. Interested if anyone else is experiencing this in MSFS2024. If not then it could mean my joystick ailerons trims are 'off'

First, when you quote a post, don't include your answer in this "quote", otherwise the reading becomes quite difficult ;)

With your second post, I begin to understand better what you have in mind. With Hollister56, we have worked a lot on the AP behavior and we have noted this oscillatory behavior that we had attributed to the parameters of the AP. We tried to limit it as much as possible because I am not an autopilot specialist (sorry, I practically never fly with this function).

To be carefully reread your first post, it seems that this behavior is present even without using the AP? Did I understand correctly?

Non, behaviour is only present when using the AP.
It flies very steadily, 'hands off', when the AP is not engaged, & holds the trim really well.

In this case, it is neither more nor less than the issue that Hollister56 and I diagnosed last week and on which we worked to find a solution. The current version is what we have managed to do better on this subject

It may not necessarily be unique to the PBY5A, (by which I mean it may be an MSFS2024 AP issue)
Found this in the MSFS2024 forum:

For my part on FS2020 I noticed in manual flight a slight oscillation of the tail when I operate the left and right ailerons.

Found this in the MSFS2024 forum:
I have seen this on several occassions. It basically S-Turns about 4 degrees left and right of the course centerline.

I believe the issue is within the ai.cfg file in the StickandRudder entries. It can also happen on a coupled ILS approach.

[STICKANDRUDDER]
rudderGroundPID = 0.025, 0.001, 0.1, 1.0, 1.0
throttleGroundPID = 1.0,0.10,10.0,10.0,20.0
brakeDifferentialPID = 1.0, 0.001,10.0,1.0, 5.0
throttleDifferentialPID = 15.0 ,0.001,25.0,10.0,40.0
throttlePID = 20.0,1.0,2.0,20.0,1000.0
pitchPID = 1.0, 0.1, 5.0, 1.0, 100.0
rollPID = 1.0, 0.1, 1.0, 8.0, 100.0
headingPID = 1.6, 0.01, 2.0, 0.2, 1.0
verticalSpeedPID = 0.4, 0.05, 0.2, 300.0,1000.0
nav_ex1PID = 4.4, 0.1, 13.0, 0.035, 50.0
nav_yawPID = 0.015, 0.001, 0.001, 1.0, 360
glideSlopePID = 20.0, 0.5, 200.0, 5.0, 6000.0
flightLevelPID = 100.0, 1.0, 10.0, 100.0, 1000.0

I was having serious issues with the Shrike F-86 and made changes to this file, most interesting reading in the SDK about this subject, especially the nav_ex1PID and the glideslopePID. The whole PID logic to keep everything at Zero, or stable is worth a read in the SDK. I don't fully understand it, but it is interesting. Everyone should install the SDK if you haven't already.

Just copy and paste your original ai.cfg in a safe place and try this mod, it should probably work with any airplane, but not sure about that?

I started a thread about this issue which was about aileron flutter, but this also cured the S-Turning too, now it will track the course very well.

Good Luck,

Ed

@ftl818,
The different stages of the propeller have been tuned by me and I have developed my own XML code ... but i never find the time to tune in detail the various propeller speeds (FVFR_Templates.xml: still propeller, slow propeller, blurred propeller ).
The aim of theses modifications was to have the possibility to start very slowly (during the energizer phase) and permit to the pilot to count "9 blades" before switching to the "start phase" ... I have to tune the parameters to obtain this effect; I note also for the next release.
I tested 16;20;40. I think better.

OK, I take note off all theses modifications and I will test this afternoon.

@Hollister56,
For the version in the Manifest.json, it's not very important for freeware. This information is take in account for payware and for the Marketplace ... I had changed the number for the next version :encouragement:

I have started since yesterday other modifications on the Blender files. In fact, to be able to use the latest plugin features, I need to migrate my sources from Blender 2.83 to a more recent version.

I had thought about version 3.6 that I have been using in parallel for 1 year but I have a big problem: I had to migrate the shaders in Blender from more than 90 material and this for 6 files, so 540 mouse manipulations :banghead:
To automate this, I started a python script yesterday (helped by ChatGPT) to do this but I encountered a blocking issue.

On FSDeveloper, RonH (also DAC40CGDFQ - one of the developers of export plugins with whom I exchange from time to time) advised me to use rather his latest plugin which performs more checks during this migration.

Therefore, I will migrate my sources to Blender 4.2.15 with the latest RonH plugin and manually pass each material on the BlackCat hoping that I can import all these new materials into my 5 other files in one go to save development time ... by hoping that I don’t stumble on another issue!

Why Blender 4.2.x and not the last 4.5 ? because the export plugin for Blender 4.5 is very recent so not yet well tested and especially because I want to remain compatible with the PBR Painter version that I use to work on textures

The old shader for the Wings material:

For each material in the BlackCat (theres is 96 in total) , yo should select it in order to activate it and the click on the "Migrate Material Data" button ...

Finally you obtain the new shaders in the lower windows of the screenshot:

This work is made necessary due to the architecture changes between the succeeding versions of Blender that have revised the way of composing the different textures to be able to display the MSFS materials :devilish:

@Brian,

The CANSO PBY-5A isn't finished: I want to review UVs mapping and some textures (interior and exterior) before the v1.0.0 (planned for December). The new Paintkit will be provided in this v1.0.0 so Jankees and Ferondoe will be in capability to adapt their repaints so I don't think that theses repaints will be released currently ;)

A new Solomon 1943 scenery for MSFS is already in my head (after my current project).
I see Black Cat missions with the PBY running up and down the "slot".

Cheers,
Mark
