Beech D18S WIP Thread

Like I did with the Lodestar recently I wanted to start a dedicated thread for the P3D v4.5 PBR version of Milton's Beech D18S. Here are the shots I previously posted in the 'Converting FSX textures to P3D PBR textures' thread.

Comp_2.pngD18S-2.png

Today I converted Willy's personal ride which is a dark green/teal shade but in doing so I took a look at the now unnecessary specular texture sheet and I actually liked the blue shade used on that sheet so I decided to make it into it's own scheme. Here is a comparison of the two schemes:

Willy-Dk-1.pngWilly-Lt-1.pngWilly-Dk-2.pngWilly-Lt-2.pngWilly-Dk-3.pngWilly-Lt-3.png

I need to find some more suitable schemes now!

In FSX, with the different shades I was getting an in the sim effect of the shade shifting between the two depending on the exterior light and the angle of view. Much like some modern car paints. I also used the effect on some of the Alabeo Gee Bee Z paints I did. I also did a Gee Bee with "ghost flames" effect using the speculars like that. Mrs Willy said I was having too much fun with those Gee Bees, but they made for some great learning experiences at paint tricks.

I used to do similar with FSX spec maps Willy. I went through a phase of making the specs a different colour like you but then adding a heavy noise layer to them so that when the light hit the aircraft at the right angle they would shimmer like a metal flake paint job on a hot-rod! I used that effect mostly on pinstripes and line-work and it was very effective.

The gold striping on that Beech had the heavy noise added to them too. Maybe I did know what I was doing back then. LOL

I just uploaded the P3D version of the Beech D18S to the Resource Library. I was unable to contact a number of the repaint authors whose files I wanted to include with regard to permission to use them and so there are only the original textures and the two by Willy. There haven't been many repaints done for the Shupe/Carroll FSX version unfortunately.

Request to add two more PBR textures.....

These two I believe were part of the original pre PBR collection. The 642 should shine better with PBR conversion.

I have one other D-18 (Navy type) if interested

Thanks

Neither of those skins were in my Shupe/Carroll FSX DL. Were they part of Milton's FSX conversion? If so they won't fit the P3D version I just converted because the mapping changed on the DC FSX model. If I don't have the textures and permission from the original texture creators there is not much I can do unfortunately. I would need the textures to be made available somewhere and details of who created the originals so that I can seek permission to convert them. If I get those two things I will take a look at releasing them as PBR textures.

Edit: Whoops! I just spotted the tiny link you added. I will grab it and take a look.

Here's a thought for all you USN aficionados! The last one above is probably red/white (or cream) paint but is the first one actually bare metal or would it have been silver paint?

Those that I sent you were done by David Carrol. I think he either obtained permission from Mr SHupe or it was a join venture, not sure.
here is link to one of those SNB's I sent you. Modifications are by Dave Carroll.

Hmmm, that's a link to the FS2004 version but a quick look at the file names and format tells me that they are indeed for the David Carroll FSX conversion and the files are in DDS format so another confirmation of FSX standards. I will get to it 'soon' as I am currently fighting issues with MCX while trying to convert another aircraft so while I am waiting on answers to a question over at FSDeveloper I can take a look at it maybe tomorrow.

Thanks Larry. I have located all of David Carrols D18S conversions to P3D and will sort thru them to see if any of them included what I have posted here already.

FSX/P3Dv4 Beechcraft D18S/SNB
This is a full FSX/P3Dv4 compliant updated and replacement version of the Beechcraft D18S/SNB file "B18DC05.ZIP" and is compatible with any repaints produced for that file. Simple installation instructions are provided. By Dave Carroll.

I've located The complete package of David Carroll's SNB/D18S textures that contain the previous two textures I U/L earlier.
I am hoping the you can converted these to PBR standards.

Link is Here

Thanks again. The link in Mediafire doesn't show zip extension but when you D/L is will....

BTW David Carroll's email (15 years ago flyway@mail.com)

The download I have does include all the files you show. When I did the conversion I converted my personal Beech 18 from FSX with the repaints that I fly. I would have deleted any and all USN schemes as I would never fly them and they were just taking up hard drive space (I normally only fly Canadian or British military aircraft with the exception of maybe 5 or 6 WWII USAAF aircraft). The conversion was originally for my interest only as I learned how to convert FSX models to P3D models. It was only after succeeded in doing the conversion that I decided to make it public.

With regard to unused textures I always delete them if I will never fly them. VirtualCol are notorious for including 30+ textures with their models and I weed out the ones I will never fly after the initial test on purchase. There is no point in cluttering up the hard drive and slowing down the sim loading time with stuff you will never use.

Well I can see things from your perspective, I can add an visual sweetener AKA "GlobalEnv_AC_Chrome.dds" and albeit it not like PBR, it
floats my boat for eye candy effect. Perhaps, I can ask someone who is also PBR qualified and "Gung Ho" for USA models. Like yourself, I
have my preferences. As far as what I sent you that you did not convert and obviously I did not know of your preferences. Guess it was just a
waste of time. oh well......c'est la vie

Oh don't get me wrong Gray Eagle (I don't know your real name, sorry) I have no issues doing your repaints, it's just that I would never fly them. I have started on the white/red scheme but I am having some issues with the textures on the underside as they are showing up as a darker shade in the sim and so are all the others so something may have changed in the model or I messed something in the conversion and never noticed in testing. I need to do some more investigating to see if it's a texture problem or a model problem.

I am also still waiting for info from USN buffs as to whether the grey one was bare metal or painted grey/silver as that will affect how I do the repaint.

Larry, if you like flying Canadian military repaints do you have the repaint of the RCAF Expeditor of 400 (City of Toronto) Sqn?
It is by Grant Maclean and for the Dave Caroll Beach 18 version.

Gavin

I do have it and I converted it to PBR textures as part of my personal version of the P3D D18S but my spreadsheet that I keep which shows aircraft/repaint creators that I have contacted for permission to use their 'stuff' shows that I sent Grant an email to the only email address I have for him and it bounced back as an 'unknown address'. As a result I did not get express permission to use his work in my release so I cannot legally put it out in the public space.

Likewise I also have C-FHZA made by Bernhard Lechner converted but again I sent an email but got no response so I can't publicly release that one either! :(

This is the FSX version of it: https://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/9395/fsx-canadian-beechcraft-d18s-snb/

BTW I did leave the FSX models in my P3D conversion so you could feasibly add the FSX scheme and it would work (just not as a native P3D model with PBR).
