Thanks normb, the autorotation capabilty is slightly exaggerated on purpose. This way its easier to try engine-off-autorotations to finetune your skills.
Another version closer to reality is coming soon. So, with those versions u start autorotating easy and the next one u will have a bit more of a challenge, just feels still more real...
cheers Jochen

That should be interesting. Do you change the weight of the blades? Watching the real Hueys do full autos compared to, say, a 206 or Enstrom was night and day. Hueys seemed really flat on the approach and when they pulled pitch and the nose up you could almost see the individual blades. Particularly once they contacted the ground.

Hi normb, we need to consider the extraordinary abilties of all Bell UH1. One of these properties is the autorotaion ability. When I saw the first autorotation performance of an UH1D in Fassberg Germany I could not believe my bare eyes. I was flying there a 1000kg Bell47G2 with a just about autorotation ability and thenm u see the "big" Bird of cuadruple Mass in compare, wow. and the when the americans demonstrated an autorotation, it looked like they could have done it twice with the same stored kinetic energy in the massive rotor.
The second one right after was flaring abut simething maby 100 feet then skidding over the runway just to demonstrate - the impression kept in my mind forever.
when I started tweaking the UH1D, yes to increase the mass of Blades is one thing, but u need to to in certain ratio with the tailrotor. With the masses u increase the inertia. and with that u increase that magic kinetic energy similar to a real UH1... thats one thing - and then u do a couple oft testflight to refine possibly near to what I have seen in reality...
The other is that u saw the blades on their own, that happens when u view your maneuver with the built in viewer. So, before the review u restart the engine and afterwards u start the viewer, in real world the UH1 keeps its RPM quite well, did u switch the turbine off ? or did u try to use the governor ? - In real world I liked recovery maneuvers with the engine at idle and the a few meters above GL full throttle - that only works fine with a piston motor ... in the sim I just switch the engine off, to simulate real full Autorotations - no mercy lol

Interesting info. Thanks. The Huey was amazing. And the Bell 47 too. And the Hiller as well. It got so any time you heard those wopping blades everyone would say " Here comes a real helicopter!". I was lucky to be around them. Last time I saw a '47 was outside a restaurant in northern NH. Older fellow (I was still somewhat young then) and his wife casually walked out, cranked up and did a leisurely (what else!} departure. Fond memories.

For those who have not flown a Huey in RL, you can't help but be impressed with the amount of mass that are in the blades. They are huge, flat, and long. Transitioning from a TH-57 (Bell 206) to the TH-1L (same as a UH-1B), it is quite a step up in capabilities.

I had forgotten about the trainer Huey. Most of the guys I worked with had started out on the little Hughes birds (sounded like a little motorcycle until they got the rotor engaged). They always described the number of birds flying at one time and the takeoff/ landing lanes. I don't remember how they moved from the TH-55 (?) to the operational Hueys.

I would love to be allowed to control once a UH1 no matter which one - bc its the big brother of legendary Bell47G2. Their "fathers" did and do marvelous jobs, i trust them nearly blindly ...
