• There seems to be an up tick in Political commentary in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site we know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religiours commentary out of the fourms.

    If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

    Please note any post refering to a politicion will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment amoung members. It is a poison to the community. We apprciate compliance with the rules.

Beware of scam paypal e-mail

Just a heads up on a scam that almost got me this morning. I received an e-mail from paypal that looked so real that I started doing what it requested of me. The sender informed me that paypal would no longer be sending e-mails to inform me of payments sent or received but if I wanted to keep this affective I needed to follow these instructions. There was a site link and I clicked on it, went to a paypal looking site where there were instructions on what to do. I read through the instructions and what they were asking just did not look right so I called paypal and inquired about it. The paypal reprosenitive told me they had no intintions of stoping the notification e-mails and to forward the e-mail I received to their spoof dept. So if you have a paypal account beware of any e-mails such as this, some piss ant needs some Christmas money.

Yeah, get a few of those kinda mails, quite regularly.

ALWAYS check the address that the link is targeting, it may say 'paypal' but in the html code will be hidden a link to somewhere else. If you hover over the link with your mouse, in the bottom left of the screen in the status bar, there will be shown the real link address, if it don't seem familiar don't click it, you can always just go on the web yourself to your paypal account direct and check everything that way.

They are getting harder to spot, if in doubt, do what Chris did and you contact them through your known links, not reply to them contacting you. Paypal will NEVER contact you asking for details, remember that.

This piss ant for one could use some Christmas money...but I swear I did not send you the e-mail.

Thanks for the warning Chris. It must be the season as yesterday I received an e-mail to re-register my e-mail account. I only needed to confirm my e-mail address and password and send them to an offically looking e-mail adress.....

I get these things all the time. Only problem is, I have never had a paypal account. :isadizzy:

The way I look at it if I did not contact you to contact me forget it.

When I need something as the customer I will let you know.
 
Real eBay and Paypal emails will have your name in them. IE Dear (your name here) not Dear Paypal Member or Dear eBay Member.
 
When I get an email from PayPal or any other institution, and they want me to do this or that, etc., I always copy and forward it to the security department of the 'actual' site, such as PayPal.

After reporting about 7 to 10 Phish emails last year, I have recived none this year. :D (they must have me on their list of 'who not to scam').

I got rid of my PayPal account as it was hijacked. Still get the phishing scams tho and delete them as fast as I can.
 
One of the simplest anti-fraud measures?

Type in the URL for the bank/business yourself and look for there for confirmation. Fraudsters can make the email look very legitimate... but if it was true the bank/business would have the same message on the site.

I've actually seen this spoofed in the page's code. That message can be made to say whatever you want, or even nothing at all. The only fool-proof way to know where it wants to send you is to right-click the link and choose "Copy Shortcut." Then open Notepad and paste it in there. If you're still not sure, pick one of the many whois sources out there and see who owns the domain.
 
I too recieved that from the fake Paypal...

General rule of thumb.......No institution of fianance will ever ask you thru E-mail for your accoung info for verification...Ever......

Handle all that over the phone ,and only if you call them....
