Children Who Get Spanked Have Lower IQs

Really??? I got spanked and "knocked upside the head" quite a bit for being mischievous as a youngster. I was never abused but I got my fair share of licks. While I have never taken an IQ test I did score pretty well on the SAT, scored high enough on the ASVAB to get selected for OCS and I completed my bachelors degree in under 3 yrs from start to finish with a 'B' average. The funny thing is that I think I achieved all that because I was spanked. The wonders of discipline.

*Sorry I didn't mean to sound like I was bragging. I was just trying to prove a point!

I ain't buying it. I was spanked...heck, I was beaten bloody at least once a week. And my IQ....has been tested many many times...and was in the high genius and super genius levels every time. In the second grade, when I took my first 'proficiency" test, or what ever they called it back in '77, my reading, math and science scores were on par with 1st and 2nd grade college levels, and they went up from there. By the time I hit the 8th grade, my results in those categories were basically unheard of. I could have started taking college courses at the age of 12, thanks to a partial scholorship from Ohio University and contributions from local businesses (the death of my grandfather killed that opportunity). My 1986 AVSAB test results for mathematics was the third highest in the nation and science was the second highest in the nation....and that was out of the testing pool for every one ages 18 to 23 who took the test that year. High enough that the Navy spent a LOT of money trying to recruit me for Nuclear Electronics training and OCS. And no, I am not making any of this up. Straight up facts.

I think the piece is just another attempt by the bleeding hearts of the world to take away even more parental authority and to produce a generation of kids who are even more out of control than the last couple of generations have been. "Don't spank your kid, put them in the corner" was the motto of the 80s and 90s...yet children who grew up under that "discipline" have caused the juvenile crime rate to grow at an unheard of rate.

-I just want to add, don't leave a gun with munitions around with free access to the kid who get spanked sometimes. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

I busted out laughing when I read that. OK...what is the excuse in this day in time. If ya spank a kid now you are arrested for child abuse. Does that article mean we are gonna have high IQ kids...BS. :isadizzy:

You gotta be kidding me right? :isadizzy:

How does that explain those of us who become adults and still like an occasional spanking? :mixedsmi:

Man, every time I got "spanked", I deserved it. I never could bring myself to spank my own kid, but she was not nearly as bad as I was. If I did not get a beating for the some of the stuff I did, I very well might not have survived to this day. We got beatings for jumping on trains, stealing blasting caps from construction sites, sailing around Haliax harour on poorly built rafts, skiing while holding onto the bumper of a bus, all the fun stuff. After a couple of good beatings, you learned not to do stupid, dangerous things. Sometimes it took a few beatings. In those days we got the sense beat into us. Thanks, Dad, I needed that!

you sound like me. trouble for me was, there were a whole lot of stupid things for me to get into, and i had to try alot of them before i made the connection :icon_lol:

***re: the blasting caps. i taught my little bro how to make things explode. we used to do it in the woods where no one could really see you and you couldn't hurt anything. dimwit blew the head off of a statue in town of some general on his horse. next thing you know, the f.b.i. was talking to my folks.

I can't tell you how many times I was spanked by my parents, grandparents or great grandmother or paddled in school. Each one I earned and richly deserved as there was always at least one warning given before the corporal punishment began. Yeah, I'm only a dentist and evidently a good one based on the fact that I have a good practice in a highly competitive area, yet I do not advertise. I'm not buying the notion that spanking decreases intelligence. Hard blows to the head, yes, it's called brain damage, but spanking? No. I am certain that if I had not received such punishment I would probably have a very different view of the world, maybe through a window that has steel alloy bars across it.

IQ tests are all maths and numbers, how many people are good at those? should do one that tests to see if you can put up a shelf or know where the food in the supermarket comes from :kilroy:

....I'm not the brightest bulb in the drawer,...but far from the dimmest. Thank heavens Mom and Dad laid hands on me for behaving like a little jerk at times. The fear of the wrath kept me in line for the most part. Thank:engel016: heavens for both of them.

A good spanking, and looking back there were a lot I deserved, encouraged self discipline, a thoughtful approach to the consequences of my actions, and self sufficiency (no longer doing stuff that relied on getting someone else p.o.'d).

So evidently carrying those traits forward into my adult life have made me stupid. Alas...

:d

Amen to that Brad! I am forever grateful to my parents for the discipline they instilled in me.

Discipline is the trait that causes a man to stand up and fight, while every inborn instinct tells him to run.

seems like y'all have never heard of "Stockholm Syndrome"..?:pop4:

I was not only spanked, I was belt whipped!

Funny thing is, I have never hit either of my two boys, found that making them do without served the purpose better. Not timeout, mind you, but made to live without the TV, the computer, the Wii, PSP, all entertainment until they came around. Not doing anything is why our children are out of control.

That article was obviously written by a true Liberal and there in lies the difference between a Liberal and a Libertarian. You want your kid to have a better IQ (super high IQs are in bred at birth, not learned), make them do their homework and school work and help them when they have a problem with it!

actually i have never spanked my child either
i used to get "the slipper" from my teachers
sometimes the garden cane
mostly picked up by my ears i blame my large ears on my teachers:kilroy:
dunno if its a good thing or not
but yes help your children thats one thing i never got
at least educational wise
i did get help in other ways manners, respect etc

Maybe by "higher IQ" they mean less well behaved. The problems we have to deal with now with college students is ridiculous. They believe they can do anything without consequences and began to blame faculty when they don't succeed.

Proper discipline by whatever appropriate means (spanking usually young with targeted withholding of privileges later) is necessary.
