'Christmas Guns'

When my boy was growing up around age 12 or so, we watched "A Christmas Story" on Christmas Eve. On Christmas morning he found a "Red Ryder" BB gun and pocket knife under the tree! What fun that was and we worked on basic marksmanship principles with it until he was old enough for a .22 rifle.

This year he found a Smith & Wesson revolver under the tree.
 
I only got a gun for one Christmas (that I didn't buy myself). When I was 12, I got a new Stevens single shot 20 gauge shotgun. My brother has it now. I did a lot of hunting with that old gun as a kid.

None of my kids seemed to be that interested in guns except my youngest daughter and she just recently got into them.
 
We divided up my deceased father in laws weapons on Christmas a few years ago.
Meant a lot to his kids and their kids to have them.

My father in law passed a couple of weeks ago. We've pretty much divided up his collection up.

Ed, I had a "Black Diamond" version of the Nylon 66 for several years. Great 22, but I never liked that wide front sight on them. I filed mine to about 1/4 of the original width.
 
I bought myself an early Christmas pressie, a Remington 870 Tactical 12 gauge shotgun ... can't wait to test it at the range ... Mike

Although admittedly, I don't know anyone who hunts deer with a revolver....(I blame my previous comment on the holiday euphoria)....:icon_lol:
 
It is certainly possible to hunt deer with a revolver so long as local laws allow it. For smaller deer, like small to medium sized white tail, a 357 magnum is sufficient as long as the range is 50 yards or less, broadside shot, with a 158 to 180 grain JHP from a 6 inch or longer barrel. A 44 magnum extends that range to 100 yards, or bigger deer at close range. No, I've never done it myself, but I do know it has been done and quite successfully.

By the way, I've never received a firearm or even ammunition for Christmas. I've given a firearm as a present, but have yet to receive one.

Never got a Magic 8-Ball either.

Actually, I do know someone who does this. Apparently it's quite the cult challenge and an emerging sport. I'm not sure what pistol he uses but I've seen it and it's a beast. I imagine he had to train quite a while to get it under control.

For this year my goof gift to my kids (25, 21, 15) was a set of Nerf dart guns. Chaos subsequently ensued.

Lesson here is that if you give Nerf dart guns to members of your family, ensure you have one for yourself.
 
Local Preacher I know uses a Thompson Center single shot pistol in some kind of wildcat cartridge that's a 454 Casull necked down to a 41 caliber. He kills one or two a year with it.

I've killed several deer with a 357 Magnum. But mine is a rifle.

My parents used 22 ammo as stocking stuffers when I was a kid.

Over the years my most treasured gifts have been firearms; from the Winchester pump shotgun that my Dad gave me as a boy to the Remington 1100 in 410 gauge that my son bought me for dove and quail a few years ago. They last a lifetime and every time they are taken afield, they are a reminder of great Christmases past.

I've put down both deer and antelope with Smith & Wesson revolvers not to mention the odd rattlesnake and rabit. .22 calibre revolvers or pistols are also legal for Blue Grouse in the Rocky Mountain states and those birds make for a great campfire feast in deer or elk camp.

Sadly I had to put a horse down once, but my 41 calibre S&W did it humanely with just one shot.
 
Okay, make that two Christmas guns. Mrs Willy just got me another of her Dad's old guns and I'm really liking this one. Remington Model 11-48 16 gauge that was built in November 1952 and is in excellent shape. A bit lighter than her Rem 1100s in 16 (The 1100 uses a 12 gauge frame for the 16s and the 11-48 uses a real 16ga frame). I've always preferred a 16 gauge over any other shotgun so this one is right up my alley. They're just a little hard to find ammo for these days, but not that hard.
 
Rock throwing distance Panther. One as close as about four feet. Field craft is extremly important with most hunting, but doubly so with the short guns.

That said, I've always felt confident of hitting the vital areas to at least 50 yards and in fact have been a military and state pistol (rifle too) champion where the target distances are 25 and 50 yards (200, 300 and 600 yards with the rifle).

By the way, if you're still stationed in the San Antonio area, the mesquite country south of you is perfect for pistol hunting. There's some pretty good sized Whitetail deer down there as well as Havalina (Pecary) and feral hogs. You might also be able to take advantage of hunting on Camp Bullis north of SA. There's a huge population of Hill Country deer on the base.
