Over the last couple of days my mums been asking for advice about a new PC for her work, which untill now has been pretty hard as i had no idea what her current specs were and she didnt know either! Well this morning i had a chance to nip down and get a ganders and was amazed at what i found considering what she has to do on it! ..

1.1GHz AMD Athlon thingi
1GB RAM
50GB HD
some sort of built in graphics chip thingi i've forgotten the name off!

considering she has to use paint shop pro etc at work i'm suprised it hasnt died in shock! made my job easier anyway "is this one ok?" " .. mum .. anythings better!" :icon_lol: The real scary thing is .. its the best one in the office!

i preference love amd ........alot of memory 6-12....and hard drive they have now hugh and spped 3.2-3.6


graphics ... is up to the users many built in ati, etc......

Can't you fob her off with your old PC (she'd never know the difference) and convince her to fork out the cash for you to buy a stonking new wundermachinen. :jump:

Caution Stiz....I have discovered making a computer recommendation to family is fraught with disaster....you're always to blame.

i know!! i hate being the even remotely knowledgeable family member when it comes to pcs!
 
Can't agree with your dispair Stiz, the machine she is using is ok for PSP, and depending on how much she has to save and file the only thing needed would be a larger HDD or an external one.

As much as we decry the quality of work today, the fact of the matter is that most of our machines will be running strong long after they've lost the ability to run the software we want to use.

I have a little Toshiba laptop that absolutely will not quit. I can't run any of the current OS's on it, cannot use any new word processing software, and can barely use it for email. But it works just fine.

Other than HDD's which I guarantee WILL die (since they physically move), these PC's just keep on ticking.

Stiz, my comment on the family recommendation is due to my father in law, who asked my opinion several years ago. I recommended a reasonable system at a reasonable cost for what I knew was his basic requirement. He has done nothing but complain about it since. Every time I'm over there I hear about it. My wife asked me if I could recommend a replacement now that the original system is almost 8 years old and I said "absolutely not!".

I have an antique 386 laptop still running the original Win98 it came with. The battery died years ago, but a replacement for it would actually cost just slightly less than a brand new laptop! :pop4:
 
My Gateway 500x is staring to show its age. (9 years old.) The first HDD it had started geting the click of death and has been repalced. I just had thermal paste put on it but its still kinda loud. I think I found a fan for it on Amazon. (Since the stock one is no longer made). The motherboad has a few leaking caps.

I'm thinking it time for a new one my self but I want to have it running XP. That mean I may be building my own for the first time.:icon_eek:
 
We've an ol[FONT=arial, sans-serif]d Dell Dimension 4550 here that the kids use. It's around 10 years old and still going strong. I upgraded the cpu,memory,gpu, optical drives and hdd's over the years,however. [/FONT]
 
My last comp was replaced in April with 10 years of good service and flying flight sims on it. I originally built it for CFS 3 based on doubling pre-release specs for that sim. It still runs great, but I was offered a deal on this one that I couldn't pass up. If you take care of one and do some preventive maintenance like cleaning it out periodically, these things will last quite a while.
 
I still have an Apple PowerBook 180 from 1992 that still runs, but doesn't run much other than the OS with it's tiny HD.. I'm always amazed at what was considered so powerful back then. wonder if this laptop will still work in 2032. Doubt it, but would sure like to have that year's model now.:applause:
