DSB/IRIS F-15C/D/J/DJ refresher project

These paint schemes look amazing!

While speaking about refreshing older models and weathering here is what I did to the IRIS F-14 Tomcat a few years ago.
I posted this in the screenshots thread to not hijack l'iguane's thread about the F-15s.
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforu...hots-Here!!!?p=1283780&viewfull=1#post1283780

I made quite a few of these gull-grey-over-white paint schemes.
Since there was no reaction to a screenshot that I had posted at all I did not post more or even published anything of it.

Hi Hartwig,
I like that Tomcat very much :applause: Nicely done ! Is it available somewhere ?
L'iguane

I know! Often I spend as much time on the original paintkit as I do on the weathering. Good weathering has a story behind it and is easily overdone.

Your Japanese eagles are really stunning. It is great to see how much good textures for a quite dated model can do.

Cheers,
Huub

Hi Huub,

Some USAF/USAFE liveries coming out, Soesterberg Wolfhounds on my list with a few others ! :encouragement:

Thank you.
No, I have not published it anywhere yet.

I might start a separate IRIS F-14 refresher thread soon and show a bit more.
However for now I would like to focus on the stuff that I am currently working on.

I will show this here when I am ready since there might be some interest in that too.

Simply superb L!!

I admire but I'm not a huge fan of modern jets, but these texs are just beautiful. As said, I really like the pixelated cherry blossom version, but love the subtle weathering/wear, especially the drop tanks and underside of the 60th anniversary version...:applause:

Are you planning on any different levels of heat staining for the engines? :jump:

Hi Sbob,

Not at the moment. I worked a "generic" stain on the heatshields, which is looking acceptable (to me! :biggrin-new:) to suit all the liveries I'm planning to do.

Cheers

Thanks l'liguane! :encouragement: Incredible how sharp you can get these textures!

But like in the image I posted, the stripes on the tails were in orange (the Dutch national colour) outlined with very dark green (The original colour of 32TFS).

Huub

Hi Huub,

No worries, simple color switch, will do!
I got a link here : https://slyartwork.com/artwork/aircraft/
showing this very one on different years. I picked up randomly the 85-86' circa with green flash with orange underline and didn't pay attention to that detail.
next years did have that orange flash with green underline.

It is strange how memories work. Somehow I still consider the F-15 Eagle a modern aircraft. But this morning I realised that it is already over 40 years that I saw them arrive at Soesterberg. I can still remember how annoying the high pitch noise was, which came to replace the real jet sound of the extreme noisy Phantom. When the F-15 passed the air traffic control tower they use to "wave"with their speed brake, the Phantom crews always used to wave.

When I looked at the profile I saw the poor F-15 from Bittburg which crashed at the airfield during the open day of 1981. I think the bend (and stripped) fuselage was still in dump area when I left the Royal Dutch Air Force (and Soesterberg) in 1983.

As the picture below shows not all F-15s had green outlined orange stripes at the tails. This had them the other way round.

It is just a classic timeless design just like the F-16 which is only two years younger.
And as the F-16 the F-15 is still in production with the F-15EX version for the USAF and I think one variant for one of the Gulf states.

Wow!
Amazing details!

Does the JASDF use these sand-colored flight suits?

Did the 32TFS F-15 pilots use them?

Hartwig, yes they do use sand colour suits, and green ones too.. think it depends on the squadron role, but I'm not 100% on that.

Personally would love to see some of these on IRIS/ DSB model

Does anyone know if the Coral-FLT F-15 v2.3 (donationware) aircraft is available for purchase and download anywhere and, if so, please post a link to it.

Many thanks,

I have it, you cant buy anywhere anymore. my advice is not to worry, the iris is far superior in every single way

Yeah, I remember spending some time trying to find a link for the CORAL V2.3 Eagle but I was about ten year's too late. :173go1:
That does raise a question, however. Does anyone know if IRIS/DSB ever released a version for his/their Eagle for CFS?
If there is a CFS version (mainly CFS2), the MDL files would display in FS2002. :biggrin-new:
Kaz Ito made a Strike Eagle that would load in FS2002 but the VC (rare for Kaz's aircraft) and flight dynamics would need a lot of work.

While we're on the subject of jets in this forum, :kilroy: , I've been goofing around with the KBT Super Hornets in FS2004.
Has anyone played around with MDL and texture files for the F/A-18E, F/A-18F, and EA-18G? They could use some updating. :wiggle:
If anyone's interested, I could start a topic on doing a "refresh" for these aircraft. So far, I've tweaked some little stuff like getting
the gear to sit better on the ground and swapping two of the MFDs in the VC. These aircraft are actually already pretty close to ideal, you can almost set the A/P
to do a precision carrier landing (just don't try it).
For the time being, I'd like to goof around with the formation lights (all models) and make them darker and change the background light for the MFDs on the Growler
so I can run full color displays at night.

One last request, just in case anyone has it. You can't install the KBT EP-3 on a Win 10 system. I finally got the standard P-3 Orion installed a while ago, but the EP-3 install files don't get along with a modern OS. :banghead:

Did the 32TFS F-15 pilots use them?

As far as I have seen, 32TFS only wore green suits at Soesterberg AB.

PS I just noticed that there is some red in the canopy frame......

Didnt the US Air Force have some Eagles that were aggressors? Seems to me I remember seeing some F-15s with Splinter Camo at Red Flag. I think that would be a cool paint job in this realm.
