If your car was good enough to get through Q1 and Q2 on hard tyres (about 2s a lap slower than the softs) then you had a soft set in hand to really wring out in Q3 and get a - very important for this track - good grid position.
1,2 & 3 have a soft set left for the race, but Alonso has only hard tyres.
He will be driving a very wide mobile chicane for most of the race, with the fans cheering themselves hoarse.

Schumacher will be one to watch, electing not to run at all in Q1!
And so saved his last set of softs.
Also Heidfeld, not having turned a wheel, starts last but has all the tyres in the world.
Will he do a "Webber" and come charging through the field?

Despite DRS (Drag reduction system; the movable rear wing) not working like it should it was an exciting race up till the end!
 
Actually, I think both KERS and DRS plus the Pirelli Rubber has produced entertaining but artificial 'racing' ........ :kilroy:
KERS and DRS are both epic fails in the FIA 'Big Book of Disasters', and I'm with Martin Brundle just waiting for the first event where no driver sets a time and they all file onto the grid in order of the car numbers!
 
Agree wombat, it's as if F-1 is trying to do-do things to make the races competitive, yet in the end, the outcome is always the same.

I thought the racing was great, but all those pit stops for tires were completely and utterly unnecessary. Christ, I hope NASCAR never incorporates pit strategy like that. Stupid!
 
Ferry, a question for you - looking down the drivers' list for this one - 5 Germans, 3 Brits, a good selection from all over Europe and further abroad, but nobody from your own fair land.

This got me thinking - when was the last Dutchman in a GP car ? Was it as far back as poor old Count de Beaufort ? Seems very strange.....
 
Mike, there have been several Dutch F1 drivers since Carel Godin the Beaufort, last ones being Robert Doornbos (11 races in 2005/06 for Minardi and Red Bull) and Cristijan Albers (46 races for Minardi, Midland and Spyker in 2005-07). Before that we had of course Jos Verstappen and Jan Lammers. Ho-Ping Tung (Who failed to qualify for the Indy 500 this weekend) has a Chinese license but was born and raised in the Netherlands and is one of the test drivers for the Lotus-Renault GP team.
Upcoming talents include Giedo van der Garde who currently leads the GP2 championship and Nigel Melker who is currenly first in the GP3 series.

I guess Red Bull might be classed a "Wannabe"!
Lacking the extra 80hp or so provided by KERS makes Vettel's win even more astonishing. He won track position, and the race, on that out lap he did, overtaking cars on cold tyres. Amazing.

I was watching Heidfeld - starting from the back, finishing 9th...probably where he would've finished if he'd done all the pain of qualifying!
 
Got to give Hamilton credit for not burning up his tires as he's been prone to & giving Vettel somewhat a run for his money...

Starts with an interview with (Sir!) Jackie Stewart... the BBC girl in the pits is a Scot...David Coulthard shares the commentary box...what the hell is going on?

I think he's smart enough to know his car's not fast enough to win and that scoring as much points as possible is the only thing he can do.
 
At least Massa is getting a good grounding if he ever decides to go 'Truck Racing'.
I think Alonso is resigned to picking up points for the present.
