"Dot Darlin" - Maj. Decklar

Last July we were contacted by the son of Maj. Carl E. Decklar, who was the pilot who flew the original P-51K depicted, "Dot Darlin". His son, Marshall Decklar, had purchased the simulation and had shown his dad the aircraft and as I recall Maj. Decklar had several rounds in this virtual recreation of his original mount. He was 91 at the time, and it was passed along to us that he thought the depiction to be very accurate, but that, as he recalled, "Dot Darlin" never carried the 75-gallon metal tanks, only the 108-gallon paper tanks - we obviously had to set things right. Maj. Decklar enlisted in the USAAF on October 23, 1942, and served with the 355th Fighter Group, 354th Fighter Squadron in England from December 1944 until December 1945. Following WWII, he served in the USAF until 1963. We were very saddened to later learn of Maj. Decklar's passing in September of last year.

Here's a few photos of the original aircraft and pilot:

It's stock part of the P-51K series. The bundle that includes the Flight Replicas Bf-109K. Thanks skyhawka4m!

Roger that...that would explain it.. I think when I bought the K it was just the K. Oh well....think I can afford to miss 1 repaint...have over 100 in my sim as it is. :jump:

I built a 1/72 model of that very aircraft. Love the Colonial Navy and other zaps made hen it cross decked.

Is that for the IRIS FGR.2? Freeware now, correct? Where can I find the repaint?

Thanks!
Jeff

It's the Virtavia model. The paints are available at flightsim.com, for those interested. They're by Andy Nott.

Looks like the AS/V FGR model ...

Thanks Dave - it looks like we both responded a couple of minutes apart.

Mr. Nott produced some really nice (over a dozen or so) nice repaints for the FG AS/V model. Much as I liked the Iris FG Phantom model, I think it'll be permanently retired, as I'm finding the AS/V one ports over much more nicely than the Iris model ...

They do port well, especially with the help of the highly-motivated individuals around here, don't you think?

Indeed. Gus, Pierre, and Steve gave us some real gems. The future is bright for the Milviz model, too, though - as a new crop of repainters are looking to do that one equal justice ...
