On this day 105 years ago, Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first the first successful, sustained, powered flights in a heavier-than-air machine. The first flight was a approx. 120 feet lasting about 12 seconds. Look at how far we've come...

Yep, Happy Birthday Aviation! :ernae: :d :ernae: :friday: :isadizzy: :costumes:

It's amazing that within just 40 years, we had fast and heavy things like P-51's and P-47's, B-17's and B-24's. In my humble opinion, The Mustang is one of Aviation's great moments, beauty and performance-wise. :ernae:

Truly the Wright brothers were geniuses. They used an analytical-scientific approach in overcoming the problems of sustained powered flight. From studying how birds turned (the use of wing warping on their early aircraft), to building their own wind tunnel to study effects of wing lift.

Not only that, but they made their own aluminum block engine and used contra-rotating props. Talk about resourcefulness and insight.
