Effective 28 Feb 2013, I retired from Government service. I completed over 48 years combined navy/civil service. I think I may of got out of DODGE (so to speak) just in time as that
sequester takes hold today but from what I hear, the full effects won't hit the wallets of the fed workers till late April. I think once this is all settled/sorted (if ever), they will most
likely get back pay. But for me, today is day one of many, I hope, that I will enjoy doing what I want to do when I want to. I don't have to set the alarm clock any longer.

Congratulations! I can only imagine the feeling of relief on that first post-retirement day. The morning coffee must taste so much better....

Let me know if you'd like to switch places. :icon_lol: I'm still staring down the barrel of another three decades before retirement...although hopefully sooner, provided my financial planner continues to give sound advice. I don't bank on SS being solvent when I retire, that's for sure.
 
Congratulations - but do keep a simple daily routine, dont just laze about. (My wife thinks I'm lazy tho'!!!). I have kept a routine for the last 9 years, building(?) FS models using the skills I had as a design & development engineer....Lucky I guess. And just think I've not had to get up early, drive an hour to work in foul weather, then at the end of a frustrating day getting nowhere with the upper echelons, then driving that hour back home!

Well, Congrats Rich. Retired here 20 months ago and we are loving it.

Wife and I love being home together and doing things together around the house or elsewhere.

Yeah, we have plenty to do and go at it casually sometimes but always timely.

Still get up 5-6AM as I am a morning person, and work on anything and everything and enjoy doing it.

Lots of time for development but some days, I never touch it.

It's a good life with each day meant to be cherished.

Congrats Rich from another Rich . I know you will really enjoy this segment of your life . I retired in Jan 09 and have never looked back . I spent almost 25 years working in a hospital . During the later 7 or 8 years when I was there I use to get up 0415-0430 . Even now , 4 years later it's usually 0530 -0600 . As Milton mentioned in his post , I also am an early person . My wife had a little difficulty in adjusting to me being home all the time . She is a nurse(30 + years) and is probably the type that her employer will probably have to wheel her out in a wheel chair and force her to retire . I was the oposite . :running:

Another thing you'll like about retirement is "if ya' don't finish a project or assignment at the end of the day".....it'll just wait for you next morning." Then, time to become a bit of a couch potato in the evening.....

I retired a few years ago, but discovered I retired too early. I'm now working again, and oddly enjoy the activity... I just appreciate the physical activity. I also enjoy the supplement to my pension!

Move as far away from relatives as you can or else wind up like me when I retiired, personal transport for every sick and depreesed family member and in-law. Enjoy your freedom mate, you have earned it.
 
Congratulations on your retirement and I do think you picked a good time to retire from the government. My wife has made a career working for the DoD, she is looking forward to being eligible for retirement based on years of service next year.
 
Allow me to add my congratulations for reaching retirement. I retired several years ago, but now I'm just tired... :icon_lol:

I also encourage you to adopt a pseudo-schedule for your day, knowing that it is now eminently flexible and may be adjusted as various needs arise. As most folks should know by now, I "work" from home with 3d modeling and gauge/systems programming for both Eaglesoft and Milviz, as well as a few one-off projects for other developers.

I set myself some realistic and achievable goals for each "work day" and then simply stop working, so I can relax and enjoy whatever of the day is left. ;)
 
Congrats and welcome to the club.

I retired last summer after 42+ years of employment including 22+ years in state government.

Despite some initial worries on how things would pan out (financially), I haven't regretted it one minute. I have been busy, busy, busy nearly every day since and have yet to get caught up on my projects. The wife just loves it as we spend more quality time together.
