Just when you think you have everything running some what better...

You get a message from the Hosting company. Short story they need to move us to a new server. I have been working with them to plan a good date for all concerned. Here is what we have come up with as a schedule.

    1. November 4th 17:00 -5UTC shut off the forums and start backup proceedures. During this time there will be no access to the forums or the Resource Section.
    2. November 5th Continue with Backups and download same until complete.
    3. November 6th 7:00 turn over server to hosting company to move system to new server
    4. November 7th - 8th restore backups and upgrade forum software.

If all goes well we should be back online on November 8th.

To keep you updated we will post updates on AVSIM forums.

    Thank you for your support.

irritating problem, cant add scenery through scenery library

As one of the originators of the idea of practical multiple installs, the installation instructions for GW3 say that you should rename the copy of FS9.exe in each new install to reflect the purpose of that install - as well as saying that you should create a shortcut to it for the desktop. I have no idea whether there is or was a technical reason for this renaming.

Renaming the FS9.exe in each install creates a unique .cfg files in AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/FS9. So, for example, I have fs9.cfg, FSGW3.cfg, FS1960.cfg etc. The only downside to this renaming, that I have found anyway, is that some payware addons look for a file called "fs9.exe" not "FSGW3.exe", so i always keep a spare to drop in & avoid constant renaming.

I can see that if you want a specific config for that specific install then yes, but to be honest do you really have very different set-ups between installs? Also if it causes problems like yours and Ian's then.......?

If you change the exe to the default one (to allow installation of an add-on), then anything installed will alter the main FS9 installs' cfg, and not the specific one you're it installing in.

Rohan, just have individual named shortcut icons for each installation, called whatever you like, just pointing to THAT installations FS9.exe file, simples.

I have never trusted the "multiple installation" approach. Using different `FS9.exe` files seems too complicated and unreliable to me. For quite some time now, I have been using one and the same executable file for about a dozen (!) different `scenery.cfg` files.

Each of these generates a distinct environment and set of traffic types. I don’t need multiple copies of various tools or other generators. Only three things need to be changed respectively renamed when switching between versions:

- `scenery.cfg`
- `Aircraft` folder
- `Texture` folder

That’s all, very simple and only takes less than a minute. Besides, I can only run one FS9 at the same time anyway. Just think about that.

Hmmmmmm....

I think you just might be onto something there...

This is kind of where ive ended up, but by accident rather than design

I have three sims that I actually do anything with, Golden Wings up to the end of WW2, FS1954 for the post-war and fifties years, JetAge for the sixties, and a nearly stock FS2004 that's only developed in my local area.

It has occurred to me that I should have two GWs, pre-WW2 and WW2, but it's one of those projects I'll probably never get around to. Instead I could just have two scenery.cfg files, and I could have Golden Age and wartime versions of air bases.

Sadly, even though it would be much easier, I'll probably never get around to that either... :(
