Lurking In The Jungle...

WOW!!! I wonder how many relatively intact WW II aircraft are still in the jungles? As I understand it, even if aircraft are found, they cannot be removed or preserved without permission of the local governments and that often involves quite a bit of red tape.

So that's where I parked! Those darn Super Walmart parking lots are just too big, and I frequently lose my ride. Silly me!

On a serious note...it would be nice to see that bird extracted from the jungle and restored to at least static display condition....flying condition would be great...but then there's the chance of a crash and burn and yet another aircraft relic be lost for all time.

Un-frikken-believable. Can you imagine stumbling on that? That was amazing.

What amazes me is how these WWII aircraft jungle relics are now worth their weight in gold,....yet during the war or right afterwards they were just so much disposable junk. Only to be cut up for scrap or deposed of.

Reportedly, this aircraft has already been recovered/removed in around late 2007/early 2008, along with six "Zero's", a "Val", and a number of "Pete" floatplanes (as was reported at the time by a few aivation magazines, and as featured in another Youtube-posted video of this recovery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKbV4sSPHvc). As with so many of the recoveries from this part of the world, many details remain a bit 'hush hush', as the circumstances surrounding the recoveries aren't always completely legal (depending on who you ask and who you deal with). Where the Betty is right now, is surely only known by a very select few.

Combat-vet razorback P-47D's, early and mid-model P-38's, P-40's, a Japanese Kate, a Japanese Dinah, Japanese Tony's, Japanese Judy's (one is currently being finished up at Planes of Fame), and more, have been recovered over the last 3 decades, many of which have been recovered just within the last decade - both legally and illegally. Many of these aircraft are currently in different states of restoration to airworthy condition, at restoration shops in the U.S., New Zealand, and Australia, for various owners.
